Fiat punto problem

Hi, just wondering if anyone might have come across this problem before. I have an 01 fiat punto, which 2weeks ago decided to give up. It has completely lost all power. It barely hits 50 and refuses to accelerate. I've had it in a garage for the last two weeks and the mechanic has checked, swapped parts, pulled his hair out and can not find the problem. As far as he can make out everything is in working order. Neither he or a few other mechanics have come across it before and can't work it out. It starts perfect and will run idle without a problem. It's just when you touch accelerate that it smothers itself and dies off.
Just wondering if anyone out there has come across this before or has a eureka moment and knows what's up.
    Appreciate any help.

Does the engine temperature rise rapidly ? Any sign of over heating since the problem started ?

Has anyone done a diagnostic on it?

Should be noted that the Ecus can reprogram itself accidentally If the battery is on the way out, the coil packs have been known to fry the ecu

Fuel pump could possibly be on its way out.I think it is located under the rear seats in puntos . Have you had it hooked up to a diagnostic machine is the engine management light on ?. Apart from that the best piece of advice i can give you is get rid of the punto asap before you loose your sanity when theY get to a certain age they will just give problem after problem and bleed you dry.

Could be as simple as a vacuum
    Leak in the intake.

Engine management light doesn't come on. Running a diagnostic on shows no faults or problem, ecu was replaced 6 months ago. Physically and mechanically there is no reason for the problem but yet there is :(
Think it's time to just scrap it before it becomes a money pit.

Try removing the oxygen sensor from the exhaust tract. If the cat is blocked, the engine will be able to breathe through the hole where the lambda sensor is positioned and this will at least allow you to diagnose the problem.

Open door, could also be the boot open, or faulty lock

    Faulty door/boot closure sensor?

The OP's original problem sounds like the ecu plug going through the bulkhead is letting moisture in, a common enough problem when the car is over 8 years old.

Meathman01, these cars do not have the traditional button in the door jam or in the boot slam panel. They're integral with the door locks i.e when the latch moves, the light is turned off. One of these units is at fault, either through age or corroded wires. Take the card off and inspect the mechanism :)

How many doors do you have? What year? Are any of the locks slow to respond or difficult to turn the key?
