I've just got myself a new job. To go with it I want to get a new (well new to me, not 2011 new) car.

My current car is a 2001 Peugeot 206, I want to get a more comfortable car, especially one that doesn't thud into potholes like my current car does with it's silly thin tyres. (I'm too miserable to replace the wheels)

I reckon that after I sell my car I'll have 11 grand in savings. (more if I wait a few months and save what I'm earning). I would like to spend 5-6k on the car as I want to keep some money in reserve but would go a small bit over that budget.

I like the look of the Vauxhall / Opel astra, and also the ford focus isn't too bad either.

I don't want a saloon, I don't have kids so don't want one yet. Three door (especially in the astra) or 5 door are fine by me. I'd also like to keep it below 1.6, not just for tax reasons but also to stop me accidentally speeding as I'm used to a 1.4.

    TL;DR

5-6k (maybe a bit more) to spend on a 3 or 5 door car. I don't fancy a saloon and I would like something that looks attractive enough for someone in their mid 20's.
