    Hi all,

i got a new Iphone 4 yesterday, i have tried under the mail app to set up my gmail account. when i enter my name, email address, and password for the account it tries to verify it but then i get the error

'The user name or password for omap.gmail.com is incorrect'

Anybody know what i am doing wrong? I have IMAP enabled in the settings as i was told on their help screen you have to, if anybody knows please let me know! Its wrecking my head now

It should be imap.gmail.com, not "omap". Was that a typo above?

Are you entering the full email address as the username?

Yes, i put my ful name on first line, next line full email address, the third line asks for password. I can sign into it fine in safari just not the stock mail app.

I have two step verification on if that might interfere?

Yeah, that's the problem. I think you need to generate a verification code to use as the password on your iPhone. There's a Google Authenticator app for this as well. I don't use it though so I'm not sure exactly how it works.

I have the code generator but it doesnt ask me anywhere to enter a key, just asks for my password. Maybe il turn it off and try it

The iPhone doesn't support Google's verification, so I think you have to create a single use password that you use just on the iPhone. This password can then be revoked if you ever lose the phone.

I turned off two step security and it is working now. You are right i think i have to set up application specific password for it on iphone if i want to use it, thanks for your help!!

Delete them through the gmail website I'd say.

Use your computer on a WiFi system to either download your mails with your email client, or through the gmail website. If you have big emails waiting to come down the line they sit at the top of the queue and block everything else until they are downloaded or deleted.
