Your leaving Dublin, heading to the mid-west of the country.

You know that road going past palmerstown and the old vincent byrne DIY store ...well just up a bit you vere left onto the M50 one road going southbound the other northbound.

But none of the signage mentions Limerick or even west:mad:

It just says southbound dun Laoghaire and northbound airport as if these are the only destinations that motorists are looking for.

I know now from past mistakes to take the southbound road but god help any other out of towners and esp tourists trying to make their way out of the capital. It really pisses me off:(

Isn't the West straight ahead from there, ie nothing to do with the M50?

theres a turnoff on the M50 southbound that eventually links up to the M7 for Limerick

    (newlands cross direction)

True, I did a trip north instead south mistakenly myself. I am somehow always missing the left turn into Naas Rd after passing Heuston. Sign M7 or Limerick at the M50 exit would be handy.

Yes the west (N4) is straight through. More south westerly places would be from the N7 I guess.

I do agree with the OP in that signage stating just north & south as you approach the M50 is not adequate. For example, if a tourist approached the M50 up near the airport and wanted to go west, there is nothing to tell them that they need to go south on M50 although the most tiny amount of research would have it all figured out.

AFAIK the M50 is signed for North and South and in the middle it says N4 West. But I can see what ya mean about not showing the way to Limerick.

The signs approaching the Red Cow outbound on the Naas Road don't mention Galway, Westport or Sligo, Just Limerick, Cork and Waterford, the ultimate destinations of that road alignment.
If you consider the M1, N2, N3, N4 (leading onto M5 and M6), N7 (leading onto M8 and M9) and M11 all branch off from the M50, should

    Belfast
    Derry
    Sligo
    Westport
    Galway
    Limerick
    Cork
    Waterford
    Wexford

all be signposted at every approach to the M50 out of Dublin?

Approaching M50 from through Palmerstown how an outsider knows how far south or north he is?
For example a little sign "N7" would sort a problem for those from Limerick, Cork, and Waterford.

M50 Southbound generally gets me to the N7. "The South" is generally signposted along the M50, but I guess this is why the political geography of Ireland is one of those basics you learn at 9 years of age.

I can understand how a toiurist might feel a little lost, but in general don't they plan journeys before they leave?

Yes, you are smart. But the point is: the world would be a better place to live with that little plaque.

If they're an outsider and know they need to get to the N7, they've probably already consulted a map, route planner or sat nav. Road users either know the basic layout of the road system or they don't.

If they know the basic layout, they know that if they're on the N4 and want to get onto the N7 (7 > 4), they need to take the M50 south, or conversely if they need to get to the N2 (2 < 4), they need to go north. It's a simple logical layout.

Putting more information on the signs than is there already would make them more difficult to read, particularly in flowing traffic.

I was on the new Waterford city bypass the other day and trying to find the Kilkenny road. I was seeing signs for Limerick, Dublin, Cork, etc. but I was halfway to Kilkenny before I saw a sign that confirmed I was on the right road
