Got a flyer over weekend advertising 3 day competition for amateurs in Carton House Monty course over August Bank Holiday. Its limited to 180 players with the top 90 going through to final day.Lots of extras like free practise balls, live leaderboard etc.Its being run by themajorstour.com.The prize for the winner is €400 voucher for golf shop and free entry to all majorstour events for 2012.Surely the value of this prize exceeds that allowed by the GUI for amateur competitions.

Nope. €500 is the limit for amateur competitions in Ireland. Actually the GUI site says £500 and I thought I recalled an official saying it was €800. Either way your comp is within limits, whether it's €500 or €800.

Looks like an interesting competition! Not much on the website yet and no idea who is promoting it. If you get to the third day it seems like very good value (approx. €43.33 per round) and practice balls etc. Nice venue too!
Not the worst for two days either!

Edit: Just looked at the Carton website.... weekend golf is €85!! Even two rounds for €130 is looking like good value!!??

Is it on same weekend as the Irish open? Bad timing if it is

Rules of amateur status states that a prize cannot exceed 500 GBP in value.
    http://www.randa.org/Rules-and-Amateur-Status/Amateur-Status/Rules-of-Amateur-Status.aspx#/amateur/?ruleNum=3&subRuleNum=2

But the governing body can put a smaller cap on it if they wish. I'm not sure what the GUI cap is, but it can't exceed 500 GBP

As well as the €400 voucher the prize also includes 'free entry to all the Major Tour events in 2012'.Seems to me that this is a pretty substantial prize. Then again it's been run in Carton which is also the HQ of the GUI so they must be aware of it.

Just some info on this comp....
Rang the guy organising it.... He said it is filling up nicely (He would though!!) and lots of enquiries. It will be played off the white tee's so a bit easier (!!???!!)
Might give it a go anyway.

Yeah Dundalk was 700 this year alright. That was a drop in the ocean compared to the bets that were one on him from PP. Apparently they took a hit of 32k in total.
