Sudden death of shrub

Any ideas what would cause an established black elder to suddenly die? It's been in leaf for about a month now, was just starting to flower when all the leaves started to droop. No pests visible, presume something has killed the roots. Obviously watering it has made no difference at all. It's a mature plant, trunk about 12 cm diameter. Praying it's not honey fungus - are there other likely causes?

No one been digging around the base of the tree, Chemical use or over feeding all could damaged the roots...
wind rocking damaged... does the tree feel solid in the ground, any sign of soil at plant base creating a hole around the trunk if that makes sence?
