Anyone know why the hydraulic lift system in this tractor is always red hot in the back especially when its in use? Is that normal? I know it should be some bit hot when its in use but not red hot that you could fry a egg on and it could catch fire with pieces of grass lying on top of it.

Also I was topping a field there today and I couldn't take off the PTO drive of the topper as it was severe hot also. It came off when it cooled down. So basically everything in the back of the tractor gets red hot when its operating.

Anyone have a bit of advice on what could be wrong or is that the normal with John Deeres? I have asked a few contractors about it who have JD's and they didn't know. I haven't seen this on any other model tractors I have driven before.

I used to work in a Deere garage about 11 years ago..Generally if a Deere came in with the back end "on fire" the brakes were shot and this was quite common. Was very common actually especially on tractors doing a lot of road work with heavy loads, dump trailers etc. The trailer brake valves just werent up to the job and the tractor brakes had to work more than they were designed to. It was still a problem on the 10 series when I finished there..The friction of the discs when the lining broke down caused the heat.
Now maybe this has nothing to do with your problem, but I'ts all I can think of.
