Science in NUIG

In 5th year last year looking up college courses and came across science in NUIG..
looked amazing! Achievable points all that..
so ive had my heart set on that until this year.. along with science and earth sciences in trinity.. both of which are about 100 points more than science in NUIG..

anyway, CAO had to be opened and filled in, that was grand..
had to do it with the daddy because he's the one with the credit card so he stayed around to see what i was picking. He noticed Galway was first and said that i couldnt go straight away. I asked why and he said it wouldnt be possible, that moneys tight and all that.
Since ive been begging and begging but still the answer is no..

what im wondering is if anyone in NUIG had this problem with their parents and how they got around it?
And if anyone could tell me if its handy enough to get a job in galway as i think thats there only concern realy, how im going to feed myself etc..

all feedback would be greatly appreciated..

i was also thinking of taking a year out to work and save, then applying again for next year, did anyone do this?

    Thanks, Niall.

You could always look into grants??

Also I'd reccomend still going through with the CAO this year and hopefully you'll get the points for NUIG. If your parents have decided to let you go this year you can accept the offer, but if you have to take a year out to save up some money you can accept the offer but defer it for a year. That way you're guaranteed to get into the course the following year even if the points shoot way up!

Considering your in Meath I'm assuming it's not a case that he wants you to live at home and commute to college everyday is it? If you're going to be moving somewhere, you can get accomodation in Galway for much cheaper than in Dublin for example...just can't see how Galway could be more expensive than other places otherwise! Sorry can't help you re. the availability of jobs in Galway...:(

i live in Ashbourne so theres a bus straight into town. like i was made take Galway completely off my CAO.. i know its my choice and all but at the end of the day its their money..
its just so frustrating so im trying to get a whole load of information together to try one last time to convince them..

Look at studentfinance.ie site and spend some time on it.
This is the info on student grants. As you dont live in Galway and provided your parents are below the income levels which they have on that site you may be eligible for the full cost of fees and maintenance of approx €3,500. You should explain this to your dad. Maybe he doesnt know about it. These days youve got to be creative about funding and all that. There is also the student assistance fund available from the college once you get your course and that usually comes through in Feb.

I've heard Science course in NUIG is very good too.

You'd probably need to get a part time job in Galway also.

Its crazy they made you take Galway off your CAO - I'd recommend NUIG highly as opposed to any college in Dublin but as I live here in Galway im biased naturally.

Dublin will be so much more expensive for everything.

    Thank you!

np - as far as part time jobs during college year they are around but not as much as previously.

Money's tight everywhere thats absolutely true but if you cost out what accomodation and eats will set you back for the year (8 months in reality) and then look at where the money to pay for it will come from by your own research then it may help your folks to turn them around to your way of thinking.

NUIG is a good place, great reputaion, Galway itself is terrific and thats from me, a Dub, who's been here for a good while. The NUIG Science course is good. Know a few people doing it and have good feedback from em.

    Good Luck.

Make sure you look into the maintenance grant which is the main one that a lot of students get. There is also the HEAR scheme which you may be eligible for under certain conditions, if you have a medical card, etc.

In terms of jobs, first year undenominated science is fairly easy going (the first year of my course was basically that, theres very little hours), so you'd have time for a job if you could find one in Galway.

Check how much it'd cost for you to commute in and out every day of the week. Student accommodations in Galway can be a bit pricey (from around 100 per week) but you can get a good quality house either with friends or with other students for around 80.

Not sure how accurate that is, I'm sure it'll give you a ballpark figure.
    Good luck :)

Ok what I'd say is considering the main issue is going to be rent, how much will transport from Ashbourne cost u a month.

Do you know anybody else in a similar situation in terms of going down to Dublin if you team up with people you know and over fill a flat/house you can bring down the rent significantly, I was paying around 65 euro in central Dublin for two years in 2004 and 2005. But the question is are you willing to live this way to live in the location you want, no single rooms, no personal space at all, decrepit conditions and a diet based on tesco bargains (lidl and aldi were a godsend).

Also is it the course or the location thats attracting you to NUIG, any idea of specalism within it

You should definitely apply for a grant if you think you're eligible, and then if you get it make sure you spend it on living expenses rather than the people I knew who got loads of sports equipment or stocks of drink.

Also there is plenty of time in Undenominated Science to have a job and still get through as long as you put in the hours of study.
I know people who worked from 1st -4th year.
Your timetable should allow you to work during the week in first and second year and definitely at weekends in third and fourth
