A US-based computing company is creating up to 50 jobs in the south-east.

Mycroft Inc, a global leader in delivering IT identity and security solutions, is opening an operations centre in Waterford.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said the creation of the positions, in research and development and cloud-based services, is a great vote of confidence in the high-tech potential of the regional economy.

So what qualifications do places like these look for? Would it have it be a degree or masters? What the hell do you study to get into cloud computing? Thanks

Cloud computing is basically just a buzzword for stuff that's stored on t'internet. Gmail is an example.

I think this is great news. We need these high quality export jobs so people will have the money to spend in shops/pubs etc.

It'd be great if Waterford could develop as a hub for at least some sort of sector, eg cloud security.

CIT recently announced that they are going to be offering a degree in Cloud Computing Studies in conjunction with EMC.

    Linky

I think this company offers consultancy services to companies using cloud computing, managed data services etc..

Isn't operations centre just another term for call centre ?

I spoke with the MD of the new operation last night.

    Couple of clarifications:

    1. It's definitely NOT a call centre - this centre is providing primarily engineering services to it's European client base though there will be some level 3 support as well.

    2. In terms of qualifications, bachelors degree plus some commercial experience. Java development skills are required.

    3. Cloud computing in this instance refers to secure private clouds for use within large organisations - basically the company are providing internal 'cloud' platforms and security services to major banks, etc.

Available positions are here here or you can just email your CV to ireland@mycroftinc.com

More on this story in this week's News & Star. Their offices will be located in Maritana Gate (by the Three Shippes) and the MD will be a native of Wateford, Sean Hanley.

I'm absolutely delighted it will be in the city centre. Too many office jobs have gone out to the outskirts (or even along the Cork Rd).

Office jobs in the city centre mean the workers will have money in their pockets, going for lunch in town, looking in shops on their break, buying a new suit or other clothes locally.

City centre jobs will have a far greater spin-off than jobs out on the industrial estate. It will help bring new life to the centre.

I just hope someone locates some of these fancy schmancy jobs along O'Connell St too.
