200k Mile Service - Give the main dealer a look at it?

My 04 Avensis diesel hasn't seen the inside of a main dealer in 3 years / 110k miles. I'm just shy of 200k miles now, and was wondering would you get any better service from the main dealer over a good independent?

Main reason I'm considering it, is I've a stalling problem that has been difficult to diagnose. Cuts out at the lights / idle sometimes. Injectors have been tested, fuel pump was cleaned (was full of crap seemingly) and have always used quality fuel.

I'd read something about SCV's or EGR's causing a problem. I hope it's not the fuel pump, as it's 1200.

So, Toyota for their knowledge of the car, or an independent for better pricing?

You are better off with a good independent than paying main dealer prices.

Also who ever is quoting you 1200 for a fuel pump is in dreamland and looking to rip you off in a big way.

How much should the high pressure pump be?

Avensis fuel pumps are are less 300 euro on micks garage and I have found that site to be more expensive than uk based suppliers.

Edit: They are probably for petrol cars but I cant see why a diesel fuel pump would be 4 tines dearer.

They're completely different types of pump. The D-4D is a common rail diesel so uses massive pressure.

OP, I'd be inclined to bring it to a diesel specialists.

ah come on, a fuel pump for a diesel is belt driven and stuck on the engine, a petrol fuel pump is a little electric yoke.

And the cost and expertise required to fit a diesel fuel pump is much different. Suggest that 1200 is nearer the correct price than 300 :D:p

Sorry, should have been clearer. Indy told me to keep an eye out for a fuel pump, as they were leaning towards that being the culprit.

Rang main dealer, asking for fuel pump price for the car. He called it an injection pump, and was 1200.

I'll start googling diesel specialists in clare / limerick.

Auto diesel services on the dock road recondition them along with injectors

Get your simple service items done at indy garage. diesel specialist as said would be good for sorting the problem with stalling.

Yes, the diagnosis is the most important bit. Have the injectors ever been done? We used to do them on warranty. I.e under 60000 miles.

The injectors were checked 10k miles ago, were fine. I'll go for the indy service and the guys on the dock road. Been thinking of going to them. They had a sign up and everything! Diesel. Check. Specialist. Check.

Auto Diesel Services weren't able to read the injection ECU. Recommended main dealer look at it. No charge, so can't fault them. :-)

Has anyone done a leak back test in the injectors, I've seen the leak back bottles with tiny tiny metal fillings and were only really visible when a magnet was moved under the little bottles. New pump, four new injectors, new pipes and rail, cost about 4k. It was on a Ford Ranger with a Mitsubishi engine. it was stalling at random but got worse and worse until it would only run for a few seconds, do you find your stalling to become more frequent?

It only happens at idle revs~1200. Had been bad, was improved drastically when they cleaned out the pump.

The injectors were sent off to tipperary (cashel? roscrea? I forget) and they were fine seemingly.

4K repair bill and I'll have to stop taking evasive action when I meet an idiot on a roundabout!

Your one of the people that make mechanics lives difficult.

I suppose a tyre for a Bugatti veyron should only be about €50 cos thats how much they are for a Micra?

Latest update - the car has magically healed itself. Starting correctly, no stalling.

I think that what happened was that after I used a fuel additive to try to correct a slight stalling problem, that some crud was loosened and lodged in the pump or injector, or somewhere inconvenient anyway. I stubbornly drove about 600 miles in it like this (mostly long trips on motorway, so stalling not really inconvenient) and it seems to have passed it's blockage.
