I have to say this is an absolute gem of a movie ( excuse the pun)

Anyone who hasnt seen it, check it out, it is amazing

Anyone else have any opinions on this movie? Also di caprio and the tupac references were excellent.

    yes it's a good one.

as some one with a special interest in Africa i'd have to say
that the loyalty between "di caprios" character and his african colleagues was especially rewarding

Despised this film myself. Blandly directed and simplistic for the most part, from Edward Zwick who's one of the most reliable Hollywood purveyors of ambitious, good intentioned mediocrity. Thought the switch to standard action movie fare near the end significantly undermined the film and the inyourface 'big issues' it was trying to address too.

However, I have been led to believe I may have misread the film entirely :pac:

DiCaprio were good though, and Jennifer Connelly had a solid haircut.

I really liked it TBH, the ending maybe a bit OTT for my liking especially when he makes the phone call but it was one of the best movies out at the time and as mentioned I thought DiCaprio was very good in it.

I enjoy it immensely but anytime I re-watch it I always turn it off before the end, I like to think that the film ends with
    DeCaprio's character on the cliff.
Had they ended the film there it would have been a far more satisfying rather than the generic and feel good note they end it on.

    It was ok

I agree it was OK. It made such an impression that now I can barely remeber the outlines of the story.
White guy comes to the rescue I think as always in Africa in films as opposed to real life where they ****ed the continent up

The only thing I can remember about this film is DiCaprio's accent.

One of my favourite films ever. I thought DiCaprio was fantastic in it and couldnt believe he didn't win the oscar for it that year.

Thought it was a very good movie EXCEPT ... for the main African character, the Dad, can't remember his name.

But he really was one of the dumbest characters in any movie I've seen, almost as stupid as Jack Bauers daughter from 24.

There was a scene where he was hiding in a bush with Leo, and he jumped at a convoy of heavily armed rebels shouting for his son, almost getting himself and Leo killed. After evading death, Leo then threatened to kill him if he risked their lives one more time, and I really was begging for Leo to torture the location of the diamond out of the guy and just leave him for the hyenas.

And there's the bit where he meets his wife at the refugee camp and talks to her through the fence.

He asks "where is my son?" ...

The wife says she doesn't know.

Then he says in a louder voice "Where is my SON?"

Then the wife says "I don't know!!"

Then he shouts "WHERE IS MY SOON??!"

Then the wife starts to cry and says "I don't know"

Then he shouts even louder "WHERE IS MY SOOOOONNN???!!"

Then his wife breaks into tears crying "I don't know"

The he starts rattling the fence and shouts at the absolute top of his voice "WHERE IS MY SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!??????"

And his wife is now in pieces on the ground "I don't know I don't know!"

It just goes on for way too long.

If you're looking for other good African themed movies, I'm sure you know Last King of Scotland. Lord of War and Hotel Rwanda are also very good. Gorillas in the Mist isn't too bad either and if you want a political thriller without the OTT action why not try Lumumba. Stay away from Constant Gardener! It has the worst direction and camera work you're ever likely to see.

Blood Diamond is a good action movie, kind of like an African Lethal Weapon. But as Jacksquat mentioned above, Dicaprios acting was fantastic, and his accent was almost spot on.

I've lived in Kenya, and toured around East Africa. Great place. Why would you like to visit Zimbabwe?
