    Hi All,
I am currently looking for a cheap mx5, I dont care about the engine in it as I am looking to replace the engine with 1 litre or something low end for cheaper insurance for a young lad. Any ideas if it is possible to put a smaller engine in an mx5 to work with the cars current gear box and other major bits.<Mod snip>

    Regards,
    Keith

That'll never work OP. Firstly, the major mod will increase your insurance. Secondly it's RWD, which will increase your insurance. Thirdly, it's a horrible insult to a great car.

explain to me how an engine repalcement is a major mod? a mate of mine recommended doing it with a 1.1l rwd starlet. I love the car and really want one smaller engine one so i can get insured.

I reckon you could get insured for the same price it would cost to do the enine swap:pac:

You're changing the engine,it's probably one of the biggest mods you can do.

changing the engine in starlet is a different thing imo, same as maybe downsizing a 2.0 sierra to a 1.6, the vehicle was sold with both engine sizes as new so you are not going to be looked at funny when you go to insure it. the MX5 is a sports car in laymans terms therefore as soon as the broker types it in it's gonna b loaded. i certainly wouldnt b going to the expence of locating or fitting a smaller cc engine until i could determine i'd get a policy on it.

As Testy said, it's a pretty major mod to change the engine.

I reckon the reason the MX-5 is loaded is because it's a soft top sports car. The 1.6 engine in it doesn't give staggering power so I don't know if changing it will change your insurance much. I wouldn't be for this conversion. They ain't the hardest cars in the world to insure, wait a year or two and you'll get it covered

657cc turbo engine, RWD. no ragtop to worry about.

I edited your first post and said this ain't the place for advertising, don't do it again

The Cappucino is seriously expensive in Ireland, more than the MX-5 for a circa 1994. That said, they're rare too.
