    Any 270 shooters out there?

I am thinking about changing from the 30-06 to a 270 for hunting deer in Ireland.

I was hoping someone could help out with some/any info on the 270. Any/all suggestions welcome but specifically: (1) what length barrel was the 270 designed or optimized for and (2) what twist is the 270 designed or optimized for.

    Slan.

    Rebarrel your .30-06 in a 24" .270

GSXR1000 off here did, and she is awesome. (his was a Tikka, but Remmy is even easier done)

Mines a 22" barrel, I think 22 is about as good as you can get for the .270, sure 24 will give you a bit more velocity but I wanted to keep mine a handy length. With hornady superformance 130g doing 3170fps I dont feel I need any more. I had a blaser r93 with a 20" barrel and with federal premium 130 noslers it was doing 2950fps so even with a very short barrel the .270 works well. Go buy a truflight barrel from Fergal White and a cut it anywhere between 21" and 24" and youll have a yoke that will shoot any 130g factory ammo over 3000 fps and will kill deer better than almost any comparable round..

I think my Howa is a 22" barrel with 1:10 twist.

It is an awesome round, but if you're getting on well with the 30.06 I don't know if i'd bother changing- unless you feel like the change?

I'm using PRVI 130gr through mine now. When I start reloading I'm going to load a varmint and a heavier round. Possibly 140gr Nosler and a 115gr.

For a hunting rifle I would think 22" is about right i.e. not too long, not too short. Im using a 22" lothar walther barrel at the moment and it will shoot any bullet well. I would advise you to get it done, you won't regret it and you will never want for another calibre.
