    hi.

i am looking to buy a used 4wd commercial vehicle for my business. mostly for traveling bad roads and winter driving, i may occasionaly do some pulling of light loads. performance, equipment and comfort are important to me. i will be spending between 15 to 17 grand.

different people tell me different things.
landrover discovery for comfort, toyota landcruiser for reliability, vw touareg for style, mitsubishi for value.

i like the look of the vw.

    please help!

It would seem that your needs do not include a 4x4's off road ability, thus I would suggest you buy the prettiest and best load capacity.

In fact, you probably don't need a "Jeep" type vehicle at all.

    Cheers,

Just make sure you get a spare engine with it.

The old Landcruiser engines were bulletproof, the new ones are rubbish.

have you considered the VW caddy 4 motion?

easier on fuel, tyres, servicing than a landcruiser, or big 4x4, good load capacity, and most importantly handy on fuel.

    vw caddy 4 motion.

its interesting, but a little basic for what i want.

i also drove a landcruiser last week.
not a bad drive, but no a/c and a bit agricultural.

    thanks for replys.

Kia Sorento XS/GSE - cheap enough, leather, climate control, electric heated seats , comfy , comes with a nice 5 speed auto box , alright on diesel and the 2.5 diesel is a reliable engine , permanent 4wd with a low range box, looks nice and cheap enough to service.

nissan patrol - reliable , massive machine, comfortable , available with all the extras , bit harsh on diesel, part time 4wd with low box

bmw x5- capable off road , luxury over capability really but a nice machine that will eat up motorway miles and do a little off roading.

    interesting.

you know your cars, what do you know of the toyota hilux.
i like the idea of a commercial vehicle with rear seats. how reliable is the 3.0d4d.

    thanks

if you are after comfort a pickup with leaf springs is not the best way to go , I used to have a sorento and have an isuzu d-max now , the comfort level has gone down a bit but the extra power and 5 seats were worth it in my book . Other users would have a better knowledge of the 3.0 D4D but from what ive heard its not a bad lump , the mk6 (2006 -2010) hilux is a lovely yoke to sit in and I dont think its that bad to drive , although others will disagree, its a personal taste thing, their great vehicles and all round well built but if comfort and motorway mileage are more important than hauling and offroad capability id forgoe the extra 3 seats and stick to something not a crewcab

A landcruiser or hilux are the way to go in my opinion they are impossible to kill the 3.0D4D is a great engine..
Its horses for courses tho everyone will have there own opinion but out of pajeros, discoverys, troopers etc. toyota stand out a mile on reliability and i know that from experience..

how do you find the d max, i have seen a few around on 22inch wheels and pretty pimped out. very conspicuous. how are they to drive.
how would a crew cab drive compare to a van, i have a vw transporter 2008 2.5tdi 174 bhp at the moment, the crewcab would be an addition not a replacement. i like the idea of being able to carry more than 2 people around.

good to know, did you have a hilux.

A Landcruiser all the way. From what I hear they are they among the best. Know people with high mileage ones and little or no bother with them.
Anyways, no matter what you buy these days, there is something wrong with them. You'd buy nothing if you listened to all them stories that come out about them all. :D

mine is sitting on the stock 16" alloys, I feel theyre too small but id never put the 20 or 22" on it , would drive horribly

i find it fine and even long distance driving is ok , its ok on fuel , theres plenty around with leather and all the trimmings on it at the moment,

if you have a van thats leaf sprung and rear wheel drive it will probably be the same or a little better to drive the 3.0 163bhp engine is a nice torqey motor and it accelerates well (youll hear complaints of them being slow , but these opinions come from the older 130bhp model (pre 2007)

the only complaint i have about my d-max is with the back empty over speed bumps your rear passengers will be in pain at anything above 25km/h

If its reliability then Landcruiser without any question despite the nay-sayers. but OP said also comfort, equipment and performance. While the cruiser is quick (tried mine out in Germany) it'll guzzle juice driving like that and is sparse on extras. Its personal preference, and really comes down to what you are going to do..

Reliabiity, towing work and big miles = Landcruiser / Hi-lux / Dmax - proven machines - (UN & 50,000 Taliban can't be wrong)

Driving about & little work = Touareg / Pajero / Sorento & others

Avoid = Discovery (lovely jeep - but will break down every 4 minutes) and anything American ie. Grand cherokee etc

    * just my opinion!
