So How Many Pandemics Have You Lived Through?

The ones I can remember are SARS, Ebola, Mad Cow, Foot and Mouth, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, and now this E. Coli mutation. Interestingly, despite the ridiculous amount of press surrounding each outbreak, I've never actually met anyone who's been affected by any of them, nor have I ever been affected myself.

So have you ever had any of these illnesses or known people who have? And I'm not talking about the people who catch the sniffles and claim it's Swine Flu.

How many pandemics, to date, have you made it through unscathed?

    Oooohhh lets' see now:
    Bird Flu
    Swine Flu
    SARS
    Ebola
Still no sign of E Coli, and I guess the Millenium Bug doesn't count as it was supposed to affect computer equipment. But, even with that, the doom mongers were still predicting the end of the world. :P

This E.Coli outbreak is not a pandemic

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,265 ✭✭✭SugarHigh

I don't think the amount of press these things get is a bad thing. It's probably what stops them turning into actual pandemics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭Calibos

All an invention of Big pharma to sell more stuff or the Bildeburg group to keep us scared which helps their agenda.

    Or??

The WHO (World Health Organisation) are doing a great job of stopping these from turning into pandemics.

Hmmmm. Can't seem to make up my mind which it is. Ah screw it, I want to be a close minded sheep and believe the cover stories. It was the sterling eforts of the WHO....Baaaaaaa.

    :D

If you are not a conspiracy nut, blame the media for making a bigger deal than needed about some of these that while warranting close supervision by the WHO and early interventions, did not however warrant the kind of hype and spin the media put on them.

If by "survive" you mean "didn't catch and was never at risk from while other people far away were affected", then all you've listed. Over the period you're describing, HIV/AIDS is probably the most glaring omission from your list.

Many of those listed weren't/aren't pandemics. But anyway, I did know of a handful of people who got swine flu (but survived).

Jaysus Liah.... Big Pharma conspiracy? Is that really where you are running with this? Or maybe Big Government conspiracy to keep people scared? Cause 1. Make people scared. 2. Collect underpants. 3. ?????. 4. Profit?

The media have probably went overboard with a few disease threats like they do with anything. That's the business they are in. But c'mon...

    SARS

Technically this never reached pandemic scale.
    Ebola

    Certainly not a pandemic.
    Mad Cow

Even the human variant, CJD, is not contagious.
    Foot and Mouth

    This doesn't even infect people.
    now this E. Coli mutation

    Not a pandemic.

And so that leaves us two slight variations of the flu, which is in perpetual circulation anyway. You are, however, a survivor of the ongoing HIV pandemic.

Thankfully I've never come across anyone with Bird Flu or Foot and Mouth, then again I don't move in the circles in which that would be commonplace.

Didn't one guy in England have it during the last major outbreak before the big one 10 years ago? Though I accept your point, along with bird flu, anyone who catches those diseases has way bigger problems that should be dealt with.

Lol jesus no. :pac: Just genuinely haven't met anyone with any of them and was being tongue-in-cheek about the media coverage, I've no interest in conspiracy at all.

It contains all the things I mentioned in the OP within the article which I skimmed rather than read (CTRL+F if you like). Forgive me if I don't seek out and define each and every virus properly for the sake of an AH thread :pac:

They're all pandemics or have had the potential to be pandemics, and they're all things that were reported as pandemics in the news when I was young, erroneously or no, so that's what I call them. If you REALLY want to be that pedantic about an AH thread, by all means, go for it, but I don't get why it matters - everyone knows what I mean anyway.

Jeez, don't get why people are being so serious/pedantic.

Just when the swine flu thing kicked off, went on a pretty saweet first date, was wondering why I got no text back a few days later when I heard they were near death of swine flu. Kinda put the breaks on it a bit.

Regretted that shift fo'sho. But I didn't catch it - invulnerable to these pandemics.
