Lexus IS200 Gearbox / Clutch

    Hi

My brother has a 2002 IS200 which has just developed a problem. You can put the car in gear when stationary and drive off, but when you try to change from first to second gear, it grinds going into second gear, almost as if the clutch hasn't kicked in quick enough. Also, there is a grinding sound coming from the gearbox when the clutch is depressed and the car is in gear.

I was thinking it was the release bearing of the clutch. Anyone any suggestions?

Probably not me thinks, new gearbox time or at least a recon. Bearings are the problem I would say, not the synchromesh.

Eitherway, its likely a gearbox issue. Not something to be tackled lightly.

    Damn.

Yeah dude sounds like a main bearing collapsed, done a few, not the worst in the world, not bad for any gearbox centre,

About 3-400 if you remove and fit the box yourself

    Ta

Removing and replacing the box isn't a problem. Will do the clutch whilst I'm in there too. Was more thinking about the cost to have it reconditioned at a specialist, but you've answered that

    Thanks.

Anyone know of such a gearbox specialist that I could send the box to?

Oddly enough, they topped up the reservoir for the clutch. Didn't take much but it was the same for a day or two. Oddly enough, there's not a sound out of it now....

    Go figure......
