I've noticed plenty of people who do this, the other day in work I saw a guy do this when moving a chair. Thought it looked a bit retarded (apologies to the guy if he was infact retarded!)

So AH'ers, do ye do it?

Do you stick your tongue out when concentrating? 38 votes

Observers noticed that the nursery-school children protruded their tongues slightly whenever they wanted to avoid a social contact. If they were busy doing something and suddenly it looked as if they were about to be interrupted, out would come the tongue.
    ...
The gesture gradually revealed itself, not so much as a pure 'concentration' gesture, but as a 'please-leave-me-in-peace' gesture. This explains why children sometimes show the tip of the tongue when doing difficult homework or other complicated manual tasks.
There you go. Your workmate was signaling you to leave him alone. Also he's a child and considers moving a chair a 'complicated manual task'.

The poll shows that those with longer usernames are more likely to stick their tongue out whilst concentrating.

What I find weird is when people stick their tongue out as they smile, usually as though after having gotten away with something. Looks quite amusing.

No, to concentrate I usually walk around in circles, or click my fingers (as though conjuring a thought), or work my way through a problem by speaking to myself 'out loud. All of which annoy my colleagues, unfortunately.

I do that too. I think it's a kind of reflex while trying to keep your eyes wide open. I find it's easier to have your mouth open when trying to open your eyes wide. I don't stick my tongue out though. :pac:

I do it all the time and don't even realise it half the time!

I don't appreciate the idea that it is a retarded thing to do or that it makes one a cretain. It's just a quirke some people have.

I had this asked to me today :)

I think the idea behind it is by stretching out your face, you're widening the eye allowing you to apply the mascara with less odds of you poking yourself in the eye with the mascara wand. I do the mouthy open thing, but if I don't poke myself in the eye I normally do a crazy big sneeze. So one way or the other it ends up all above and below my eyes =/

I think I do a little tongue-out thing if I'm concentrating on what someone is saying to me, or sometimes if I'm driving. Apparently I've another face for writing though - a sort of stiff-faced lip twitch to the side thing, that doesn't sound very nice =[

Surely one stretches the skin around one's eyes more by keeping one's mouth closed and lowering one's upper lip as far as possible?
