VW 1.9 TDI Golf Looses power and cuts out at junctions

Hi everyone, first time poster I hope someone can help. I have a 2006 MKV 1.9 TDi VW golf. The car has developed an intermittent problem which I am having great difficulty diagnosing. When the car has been running for a while and is at normal temperature it intermittently cuts out when I stop at a junction or traffic lights. There is no noise and no lights come on it just cuts out and then when I try to restart it I might have to turn it over for a couple of minutes pumping the accelerator to get it to start. It will then run very roughly when it is idling and will generally cut out again the next time I stop. When this problem isn’t happening it starts perfectly every time and runs perfectly. As I said no warning lights come on, I have had a diagnostic run on it and there are no errors showing. The fuel system has been cleaned out and the pumps are fine. I am not sure if it is related but when I get onto the motorway in 5/6 gear and I accelerate hard the car jumps a lot, if I easy off the accelerator it runs fine again. I have done some research and I am aware it could be an electrical fault like a ground but I wondered if anyone had any experience of this.
    Hope someone can help.

I know you say you had the fuel system looked at, so this may be done already, but what about the fuel filter and air filter?
If either, or both, are filthy that could cause problems.
Other than that it could be hoses connection air intake, filter, turbo, injector, etc...
    I'd start there.

I'm going through a very similar problem with my 04 diesel avensis. Start with the fuel and work up really. Fuel, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel line, injectors. I've changed my fuel filter, had the injectors tested. There was a load of crap in the fuel pump seemingly, which was cleaned out. Still not quite right, may need to bring it to the main dealer for a 200k mile service and a bit of fault finding.

Hope to god it's not the fuel pump. They call it the injector pump, and it's 1200!

Oh, Solenoid Control Valve and EGR are other things to check according to nerds on the net.

    Tried using some dipetane?

Be careful where you are getting your diesel, a lot of dodgy diesel around these days !

If you have the same engine which i guess you have i had a similiar problem on a 05 skoda octavia 1.9 Tdi where it was driving normally and then for no reason would loose total power.
    Very Dangerous..

There were no fault codes logged......so with time and patients i found a chafed wire supplying the camshaft sensor.

Behind the oil filter housing there is a wiring loom supplying the camshaft sensor and another loom teeing off that to the map sensor (turbo pressure sensor) pull back unsulation and check all wires.....see photo.
If the problem is'nt there i still think the problem is camshaft/crankshaft sensor related.....:)
    Best of luck with it..;)

If it's running rough I'd say take a look at the throttle body. Take it off and give it a good scrub using carb-cleaner.

Easy job and carb cleaner costs a fiver.

Guys thanks for all the help. The reason I don't think it is fuel is I have had the fuel system, filters and tank cleaned out thinking that was the reason. Like you Row there are no warning lights which in modern cars makes the problem harder to find and I dont want to spend a fortune changing parts trying to track it down. I have read on other forms that it can be an electrical problem like a bad earth and on older MKIII & IV models a particular fuse, but on more modern Golfs that was sorted.
Row I will take a look and see if your suggestion helps.

It may not be your problem but here is a closer look at the chafed wire i found...After i soldered & fitted heatshrink it has been fine since:)

Hi, I wonder if anyone else is experiencing similar issues. My engine on Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI '04 started to cut off while idling. I would have difficulties starting the engine and it would take a while to get it back and running. It would not reoccur for some time and then same problem. I wonder if it could be something to do with airlock in the fuel system, or something. Anyone, any clue?

Having the same problem myself recently with a 08' Golf 1.9 TDi.

Car cut out when driving down the road about a month ago. AA had a look at it in their garage after collecting it and gave me a price to replace the fuel filter, brought it to my own mechanic and he reckoned it was the fuel filter too.

He changed the filter and it was grand for 1 week until it happened again. Got it started back up by keeping the key turned for maybe 8-10 seconds and it eventually starts up. Brought it back to the mechanic who updated the new part on the cars computer, thought that might fix it, but then it happened again 2 days later. Then another 2 days later, then again 2 days later.
Everytime it starts back up (sometimes it needs to be left a few minutes) after keeping the key turned for a few seconds.

Brought it back to the mechanic again on Friday last, when I collected it from him on Saturday he told me that he turned the car upside down and only found 1 small issue which he wasn't confident would even fix the problem I was having (it was something to do with a dodgy relay near the fuse box somewhere)
Anyway, he was right not to be confident as it went again last night, so pretty much back to square 1.

I'm going to bring it to a VW main dealer today to try get them to diagnose the problem, but the fact that the car is currently running perfect (and probably will be until tomorrow or Wednesday some time, going by previous patterns) and that there are no warning lights etc. I'm not that confident that i'll get a solution here too easily.

I also have recently noticed what the OP said above about the car jumping a lot on the motorway, again no idea if it's related or not!

One thing that's probably important to state is that when I was getting the job done originally I was also due a service and timing belt change, so had both of them done along with the fuel filter!

Assuming the mechanic would have noticed the chafed wires (no guarantees I suppose) does anyone have any ideas of anything else that might cause this?

    Cheers,
    N

All the above remained reminds me of my 1.6 kia going wallop. When brought to a main dealer they checked the injectors and said they were fine but they then sent them to a specialist company who said all 4 injectors were goosed.. Same symptoms.. Cutting out at lights, unable to restart and lumpy on motorways.

    Hi all,

Just to give an update on this............
I brought my car into a main dealers who were unable to find an issue initially. I had the use of an alternative car for the week so they agreed to hold onto the car and keep driving it and hoped that the issue would reoccur.
It finally did which meant they were properly able to diagnose the issue.

And as I assumed it was something very small and silly............

Basically the original guy who put in the fuel filter put the pipe for the inlet and outlet on the wrong way around.
The VW main dealers said that it would still run in general as there was still fuel getting to it, just not correctly.

So all that hassle because someone wasn't paying attention when he was changing the filter day 1!
But i've had it back a good few weeks now and it's been perfect to that does seem to have fixed it!

So if anyone else has an issue like this check out the simple things!

    Cheers,

    N

    Hi All,
    just to share my experience.

I have VW Passat 1.9TDI 2008 model. This car has been serviced regularly but started giving me problem, initially at start but then later it started to stall at junctions or when I take exit from a motorway. It then starts again if you use easy start or keep inserting key In/Out several times (not full insert only half) before starting the engine.
Nothing was coming in diagnostic but at the end it was the weak fuel pump (inside the tank). Since replacing this (cost £280 including labour) the car is running absolutely fine.
I hope this will help others to identify similar issues.

    Check battery terminals?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 arsal

battery is fine and checked by mechanic, in my case it was the fuel starvation which so far has been resolved by changing the fuel pump.
