Bringing mechanic along when viewing car

I'm in the market for a car at the moment. I've narrowed it down to 4/5 cars in my area. My last car gave me a lot of trouble and I'm looking to avoid this second time around.

My mate told me he knows a mechanic that will go with me to the dealers and check the car out before I buy. The cars I'm looking at are all around the 9k mark and the mechanic only charges 50 quid (maybe more depending on the number of garages we visit).

I'm wondering is this very common and how worthwhile is it? All the cars I will be looking at are 2007/2008 with between 20k and 35k miles.

Has anyone done this in the past and how did it work out?

anybody knows mechanics who would do that?will need one soonish to go look at a car

i think its done commonly, at least its better than someone going on their own and having NOT ONE clue.

if only i had more friends... (of which 1 was a mechanic)...

Paying €50 to somebody who knows their beans to look over a car that you are about to spend thousands on, is money well spent.
