Renault Megane Immobiliser issue

I bought a 2003 Renault Megane coupe three weeks ago. The car had an unoriginal stereo system in so I bought an original off ebay and installed it.

All was well, I drove the car to work the next day but when I got back in to go out to lunch it wouldn't start again. It hasn't started since. I got the AA to get the car to my house but can't get it going again.

Basically when I insert the key card all the lights on the dash come on as they should. When I put my foot on the brake and press the start button I hear the click behind the dash and the fuel pump come on as always but the Immobiliser light comes on and the starter motor does not turn over.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Have you got a spare key?
Take out the stereo to rule that out.
Is the car battery in good condition and hold charge?
What engine is in the coupe?
    Did the AA diagnose anything?

Try jump-starting it as well - afaik, the immobiliser should cut the fuel pump but still allow the starter to turn the engine over. It could be a dodgy battery on it's last legs.

Is the steering lock on by any chance?

I've seen similar asked a couple of times. If you try start with the steering lock on itll just click. You have to turn the wheel at the same time to disengaged the steering lock. Same as you would on a car with a standard key (key in, turn while turning steering wheel, only with the keycar system you push the start button and turn the wheel at the same time, with your foot on the brake or clutch)
