Yep, just disable data and you should be fine

It's not really your phone that matters in this case, but rather the network. Call your provider and ask what their charges are for data abroad.

If you are roaming in the EU you can only be charged €60 for data, unless you have agreed otherwise with your operator, which you wouldn't have unless you agreed with them specifically to allow you to go up to a certain amount before they cut off your data.

Meteor is the only operator I would consider data roaming with and that is 99c per MB. I would seriously turn off your 3G and only use data abroad if necessary.

    Use Wi-Fi spots etc.

Meteor are actually the worse operator for data roaming, since they have no international partners (being an Irish company). All the competitors have an international presence and offer various deals that let you use data abroad. But yes it's a bit of a minefield with the various "roaming addons" and such. I'm with vodafone at the moment, and my data usage in the UK comes out of my 1GB allowance (only because I purchased the data addon). 3 and O2 offer similar deals I'm pretty sure.

But yeah, always use wifi if possible, and don't assume that you can use roaming data even if you have paid for it.

The HTC Desire has an option under Settings - Mobile network Settings for "Data roaming". It's disabled by default. Does this not mean that you can't do data roaming when abroad unless this is specifically selected?

Correct. You must explicitly enable data roaming.

I had that setting disabled on my recent holiday, but to be on the safe side i also checked that "background data" was disabled too- I only switch it on when i need it anyway, but i don't know whether having background data enabled would over ride the data roaming setting?

    It shouldn't.
