file structure for external hard drive

    which is the best file system to use for a drive being shared by both osx and ubuntu, i would like to read/write both?

    FAT32 would be supported by both natively, though obviously there are limitations to usage like the 4GB file size limit. Ubuntu supports NTFS, which doesn't have this limitation, and I think there's a tweak out there to allow writing to ntfs on osx, but I don't use a mac, so I'm afraid I'm not 100% sure.

    I do believe you can get third party support for writing to HFS+ on Ubuntu, but I'm not sure about osx writing to native linux file systems.

    fat 32 is no use to me sadly... hfs+ seems to be the logical choice, will check out ubuntu support. cheers
