Great to see Mike back.. He's always been a genuine, decent, funny guy.. They could give him either of the 9am slots on radio and he would do a much better job than the current presenters..

For the first time in 10 years, legendary broadcaster Mike Murphy will return to RTÉ Radio 1 this bank holiday Monday, 6 June. He will present highlights from 'DublinSwell', the March event which celebrated Dublin's designation as a UNESCO City of Literature.

The programme begins on RTÉ Radio 1 on Monday at 2pm. It will feature a selection of music and readings from 'DublinSwell', which took place at the Dublin Convention Centre on 18 March.

I think I remember reading recently that he was taking over the Miriam Meets slot but not 100% sure on that. Either way, he is a first class and much missed broadcaster and yes, in my opinion would be perfect for the 9am to 10 slot. A wise move.

I'd like to hear him on RTE radio 1 again, goodness knows he'd be far better than the likes of John Murray (or indeed Ronan Collins if music were part of the mix).

Mike Murphy used to be great on the arts slot in the afternoon on Radio 1. He seemed an odd choice as presenter as he had no real background in the arts but his genuine curiosity really made the show. He had no real pretensions about himself so he kind of took that element out of arts coverage, "the arty-farty" point of view, if you like.

yeah.. I remeber Scrap Saturday used to take the piss out of his lack of knowledge in their sketches.. I remember one sketch where Mike Murphy is talking to Charlie Haughey about the expensive art in his house, with Haughey (whose wealth was the butt of Dermot Morgan's satire) saying.. "I'm a fan of Jack B Yeats".. to which Mike says "ahhhhaaa, so you like little poem now and then, ahaa"..

Mike was working in property.. could be the case that he needs the money now..

Mike Murphy is actually a very wealthy man, not some fly by night merchant that passes as a business man nowadays.

I saw a program with him a while back.. He was talking about his marriage break up, leaving The Live Mike, and pretty much everything in his life.. At that time he seemed to be working on a block of apartments in some sunny european country.. He seemed to have some sort of marketing role, possibly showing the apartments..

Yeah I remember that program too. Believe it or not I heard on the grape vine that he became quite wealthy from buying and selling paintings. He must have treated some of the art experts from his show to a coffee in the RTE canteen. Did he once also have an insurance brokers?

While I did enjoy Mike Murphy in his various guises in RTE over the years, surely to God there are plenty of younger talented people who could be given a chance rather than taking on a 70 year old? It's the same thing with schools employing pensioners rather than newly-qualified teachers. Him, Gay Byrne and Larry Gogan have had their careers - time to give some younger person a chance. If they just want to do radio (and are not in it for the money) there are plenty of community stations that would love to have them.
