Thinking of picking up a D-Link DSN-320 NAS box. I started off just wanting a hard drive that would sit on my network as I'm fed up of having to transfer things between different devices with wires. Looked at getting a new external network hard drive, but the more I read into it the more I think a NAS box would be far better.

The DNS-320 looks good to me because it's cheap and has a lot of decent features. Aside from just being able to easily share files between devices, I could also access my files from anywhere over the internet, use it as a torrent box, and easily back up my files using RAID 1.

I currently use an xbox 360 as my media player, which should be compatible through UPnP. Then I'd also like to use the drive as a mapped drive for a few windows pc's, and then also with an Android phone and probably an Android tablet in the future. Maybe with iPhones/iPods too but I don't really care that much about that as I don't own one.

My question is simple. What would I get if I spent a bit more money? The d-link is fairly cheap, if I spent a bit more would I get many more features? I guess the only other thing that would really interest me is streaming tv to the xbox, but that's only possible through windows media center (I already use skyplayer with the xbox). I'm fairly good with computers but don't really have much knowledge of setting up a media server or what the full potential of them is.

I'd avoid wireless when it comes to media steaming.

The xbox is plugged directly into the router, the NAS box would be too.

the dlink will work fine, i used to have a synology box that worked very similarily. the only problem you may have is the limited file support on the 360, either you'll have to convert the files before you put them on the dlink, or else check if it does trasncoding on the fly

I already have about 1tb of media on an external drive that the 360 plays fine (all standard def stuff, haven't bothered with HD yet).

Am looking at getting a 2tb drive for this, and then taking the 1.5tb drive out of my external to also use. For RAID 1 do the drives have to be the same size? I've only 1tb of media and it'll be a couple of years I'd say before I fill the 1.5tb drive.

not sure on how the dlink handles raid, but in most cases yeah they need to be the same size. might be better off just getting another 1.5 to match what you have
