    Hey everyone,
I'm a 16 year old student who has just finished Transition Year and I am looking for a part-time job. I know there are very few jobs out there at the moment for obvious reasons, but it's not going to stop me from trying! I have my CV written up, but I was wondering what else could I put on it to make it look good? And my second part of the question is how do I actually get a job? How did everone else get their first part-time job?

Depends where you're livin really. If you're in Dublin, it shouldnt be too hard finding some work, especially since you're not entiltled to minimum wage.

Best bet is to go into shops and ask the manager if he needs someone to do a bit of tidying up, sweepin the floors at night, that kinda thing. Leaves your days free and a few bob in you're pocket.

At 16, while it would be nice to go and find a job by yourself, it's really important if you have folks who can pull strings for you. (In fact even for ANYBODY getting a job, a fair amount of the time it's about who you know....)

Do your parents have friends who own a business of some sort, someone they might be able to have a quiet word in their ear and say 'any chance of a few hours a day/week' helping around a shop/garage/yard/office etc.
Aunts? Uncles? Anybody who might be able to help ? I know that's how I got my first job at 17, it was in a local supermarket packing shelves/bags/sweeping floor, great to get it at the time for £3.00 p.h. (years ago) but it was my mother who spoke to the manager and got me in there.

I'm saying this because, while I'm all for young people showing initiative and knocking on doors for themselves, there are very few managers/proprierors who will be willing to take you on by simply asking for them.....at 17, I had asked that manager first myself and she told me 'sorry, but there's no work here for you at the moment' and fobbed me off....I went home in tears. She didn't know who I was, but when my mother went in asking for her, she knew her casually as a customer and offered a job to me, that customers daughter, on the spot, delighted with the 'extra pair of hands' !!! The look on her face when I presented for work the following week was priceless (my parents wisely told me to say nothing and get on with it...) Good luck !!!

I agree with the last poster. Last summer I got a job in my local shop due to my family knowing the owners. I also got work in a hotel because my cousin was working there. So if you have any relative or friend working anywhere get them to put in a good word because in many places they don't even look at your CV.
And of course it also depends where you live. There are very little summer jobs where I live. :(

    Hi all,
Thanks for replying. I've decided to take your advice. Today I went through the town and handed my cv in anywhere and everywhere I could. It's actually such a Hard thing to do it's unbelievable. But I really want a part time job so you gotta do what you gotta do! There's a new cafe opening in town so I may have hope. However, if I don't get any replies whatsoever, I'm going to get my mam and my cousins to put in a good word. I'm off to hand out the rest of my cvs! I hate doing this! Thanks again!
