Strange Hotmail Account Hack

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. Basically, I woke up today and checked my hotmail account and found a load of emails had been sent last night from my account.

There's two strange things acout it. Firstly, I just assumed that the main way you get hacked is through a keylogger of some sort and the email account would be almost instantly logged into. But I haven't accessed the account in a couple of days. It just seems odd that they'd wait a few days if they got my details that way. So does anyone know if someone would try to hack a random account, and that could be why my account was hacked last night?

They didn't lock me out of the account, and only sent emails to a few of my contacts, which I also find odd for a bot or person to do, when they could have done more damage.

Secondly, they sent an email to a guy I knew when I went to college over 10 years ago. I don't have any details of this guy at all in my hotmail account. He's not in the contacts list, there's no emails to or from him, and there's none in which he might have been mentioned (after college, I didn't have any contact with him at all). So I'm wondering how someone could have gotten that email from my account. Anyone have an idea?

Sounds like they raided your MSN messenger list. If that person has you added to MSN Messenger that info can be called up. I looked at my one the other day and somebody I knew from 10 yrs ago also has me on their contact lists still. I have them blocked for 9 years and they are not on my list. I can still see I'm added on his if you get me.

Change your Password immediately if you havent already done so.

Is it possible you signed up to a site using your email address and the password that you used is the same one to access your email.

Lots of people have one password for all their accounts so accidentally give their email password to most sites they create accounts on.
