    The Three Abrahamic Religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam

    Jews, Christians, and Muslims share a belief in the one true God.

    Abrahamic Religions. They are named for the patriarch Abraham, and are unified by the practice of monotheism . Today, around 3.4 billion people are followers of Abrahamic religions and are spread widely around the world apart from the regions around South East Asia.

    The Coexist Foundation is an interesting development ;
    The Coexist Foundation is a charitable organization based in London, England which aims to improve religious relationships between people of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian faiths. The stated mission of the foundation is to "promote, encourage and support engagement between Jews, Christians and Muslims both individually and through their respective communities through dialogue, education and research.

    In the wake of 9/11 it has become more important than ever that Catholics have an accurate view of Islam. A starting point, though not the ending point, is reading what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say. It states, "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day" (CCC 841).

    To understand this, one both has to look at the original context of the quote. The Catechism is not a freshly drafted document. It is in large measure a synthesis of other documents, and one has to look up quotations in the original sources to understand them fully. This is the case for the Catechism’s statement about Muslims, which is taken wholly from Vatican II.

    Many find the first part of the quote perplexing: "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims." To many this sounds like Muslims can be saved by adhering to Islam. That isn’t what it means, as shown by the original context.

    Could I mention the Three Faiths Forum? This was founded in 1997 by Sir Sigmund Sternberg, Rev. Marcus Braybrooke and Sheikh Zaki Badawi to provide a forum for inter-faith activities, particularly by encouraging youth and education-related events. An interesting example of this last year was the sponsoring of a competition whereby teenage girls were given the opportunity of attending a workshop at the London College of Fashion to consider how to develop clothes that are at the same time fashionable and modest, meeting religious expectations.

    The Forum has also sponsored initiatives on business and sustainability, and I attended an interesting seminar a couple of years ago where people of different faiths discussed how their religions provided a theological foundation for the support of social and environmental sustainability.

    What we have are three religions claiming to identify the One True God. All agree that He is the God who revealed Himself to Abraham. All differ on who He really is. For Jews, He is one person. For Muslims, the same. For Christians, He is three persons united in one Godhead.

    This means these religions differ not only on the nature of God, but also His purposes. The Jew awaits the Messiah and Israel's exultation over the nations. The Muslim awaits the Messiah and the complete victory of Islam. Christianity's Messiah - God the Son - has already come, redeemed them from their sins and ascended to His Father's throne to await the Last day. Then He will come and destroy all the wicked and establish the new heavens and new earth, where God will dwell forever with His people.

    If three men presented themselves as ambassadors of a Great King from far away, but disagreed on His nature, character, sayings and plans - would we think them all his servants? Would we not rather think at least two of them are imposters?

    ************************************************************************
    John 8:39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.”
    Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

    or taking the analogy from the USA state, each comes from a seperate branch of government: ie Peace Corp, Dept. of State, US Army etc. Each drawing from the same base authority but with very different remits.
