I appreciate that the RTE channels are encrypted but is there any possibility of the channels become free.

They are "Free" on Saorview which requires an aerial and suitable receiver. They will never be on Freesat (which is a UK TV service). There is testing for Saorsat happening at the moment which will also be "Free" but it will not be on the same satellite as Freesat and Sky.

Thanks for the reply. Any idea of what the spill over into the North is likely to be. Is it possible that the service will cover all of the island? Any idea if Saorsat will be capable of picking up the UK channels?

I'm really making inquiries for my sister who is in an aerial blackspot and would ditch Sky in the morning if she could.

Myself I receive RTE Saorview via my aerial and a very good signal it is. HD sport brilliant!

Back again, done a little bit of Googling and came up with this:

'Saorsat is going to use KA-Sat at 9° East and not Astra 2D at 28.2° East, which most Irish channels currently use. This will mean that viewers will probably need two systems, one for Saorsat and one for Sky or the UK's Freesat. '

But I'm none the wiser. Does this mean that two dishes would be required, or two complete systems ie. two sky type boxes?

One dish with 2 LNBFs and a Diseqc switch connected to 1 receiver will be fine.
