How do Moisturisers work?

Do they help skin to retain it's own moisture by preventing it's loss or do they hydrate themselves, like water?.

I've been using Nivea brands as well as the odd bit of of No.7. Also Bio-oil. Any other recommendations?.

I had the worst skin imaginable for two decades until I figured out cleansers and moisturizers properly.

Regarding moisturizers I suggest using them after a shower and don't rub your face dry after the shower - just one pat and then put on the moisturizer.
