    Hi I just started on boards.ie today and this is my first topic :D

    I was just wondering what people think about words like homophobic? Why do they say people are scared of homosexual people instead of disliking them? They dont say race-phobic or something they say racist but when it comes to homophobia they say people are scared.

    And i was reading the women pretending to be stupid topic. why do people say that people are intimidated by inteligence or confidence? Maybe they just dont like it?

    Phobic doesn't always mean scared of, it can also mean things like dislike, hatred and so on much.

    Much like being Xenophobic.

    Homo is about homosexual in this word :D and I know people say it means dislike but it can also mean fear like a phobia.

    I'm a gayist.

    I've yet to define it but I like the way it sounds.

    I think people tend to think that anyone that dislikes homosexual people must be 'in the closet' and therefore scared of their own feelings. Either that or people use the word homophobic because homosexualist or gayist just wouldn't sound right.

    I saw a documentary once where someone really did have a phobia about homosexual people.

    Phobic/Phobia always mean fear or morbid fear.

    Xenophobic = fear of strangers.

    Homophobic is a word that is rarely used correctly.

    I prefer the term "Anti homosexual" as being more accurate.
