    Hi guys,

Would really appreciate urgent advice on the following.Going up to Dublin today to purchase a car but my insurance brokers are closed on Saturdays and my insurance company Axa have stated that i deal with the broker on any insurance on all dealings.

Iobvioulsy need to change my insurance details for this car but because the brokers are closed today i'm in limbo with the situation.

Can i purchase the car and get some sort of alternative cover so i can drive away with the car.I live in the South so not much alternatives.

    Any advice would be appreciated!!

    Ta!

Can you get someone else to drive it who has ‘driving of other cars’ extension?

I think that only applies were the car is already insured.

OP, little good to you now but for future reference and to avoid alot of grief. You can pre arrange with the insurance company or your broker for the insurance to transfer over at a certain time and date. I.e. You could have rang them yesterday and told them that you were collecting it today at say 16:00 and wanted the insurance to transfer over to the new car from then onwards. I've done it many times when changing cars.

Yea that's what I did when buying a car on Wednesday night and it's what most people do too.

If car is still insured at the time of collection, another person with 'driving other cars' on their policy could drive it.

Or, if it's completely uninsured but has valid tax, NCT and is registered in someone elses name other than your own, you could drive it on a 'third party extension', provided that's available on your policy.
If that's not available on your current policy, look for someone else with a good policy and see if they have it.
It'd only be insured third party but it's better than nothing.

That term '3rd party extension' varies a sh!tload from one insurer to the next (some refer to 'driving other cars' as 'third party extension' and state the car MUST be insured etc) so do your research.
Octane discussion about 3rd Party Extension etc

You have a couple of options.

Most insurance companies will accept out of hours emails,ie you email them at pick up time and say "I am permanently transferring my insurance onto vehicle reg . . . . as and from whatever time",ideally it would be a scanned letter with your signature visible on it,that will suffice until Tuesday when you can do the perm sub officially.

You could also get someone with driving of other cars to drive it back for you but it will likely be third party only.

You really should have set it to transfer with your brokers when they were open though.Even if you were unsure as to the exact transfer time, companies will give you an hour or 2 grace either side.

Depends on the policy. Some do and some don't. For example Quinns don't require the car to be insured elsewhere.

Recently had to switch insurance between current and brand new car with Quinn, I had to switch my cover over to the new car, as it wasn't insured otherwise, policy wouldn't cover it otherwise (full comprehensive).

Got caught by this once or twice bringing cars back from the uk on a sat. Now I just go on the axa site and fill in the temp change form and submit it online, suffices til I can call in on Monday. Oh and I'm with axa through a broker but it doesnt seem to make any difference.

Ye, I've had the 'driving of other cars' extension with a few different companies, and there was no mention of the other car needing insurance. Anytime I've done it, I carry my own insurance disc and certificate, as failure to display a disc is a separate offence.

This is probably the easiest solution for the OP, but I'm guessing they've sorted it by now.

Ye, that was because you owned both cars at the same time. Most if not all companies state you can't have 'driving of other cars' cover on another car you own.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
