A Saorview box will get UK & Irish digital, but not UK Freeview HD when it starts broadcasting from NI in 2012 (I'm assuming you're in Dundalk).
Freeview HD box will get all channels at present & UK HD in future but may have issues with details of Saorview spec.

No. If you get a FreeView HD box in the north, it will work for you now and get the BBC HD when it comes in the north in 2012

It has to be freeview-HD approved - http://www.freeview.co.uk/HD/Products, with the freeview-HD logo.

A standard def. Freeview box will be ok if that's all you want but it won't get the Saorview channels.
They're cheap so might do to squeeze the last bit of life out of a very old tv, couldn't recommend otherwise.
