I was watching the French open there and couldn't help but notice the French crowd going ballistic cheering on Federer against Djokovic. I also noticed this at the US open when he was even playing Americans on there. He's a God. You'd think he was French out there.

What makes him so popular exactly??

The only other human being on the planet who could match his popularity is Barack Obama, for that reason I still think he is the most popular human being out of the 7 billion of us on the planet.

I consider myself a bit of an internationalist and I love it when some people e.g. Barack Obama, Roger Federer can somehow have to ability to transcend nationality. Tiger Woods goes in that bracket as well.

Obama for me is still number 1, for me I've never seen a more popular human being ever. Simply amazing.

Outside Ireland, Bono is the most popular person in the world.

It's true and you all hate that fact.

Well, he is cute, talented and rich. Federer that is, not Jesus. Although Jesus was pretty talented too, I guess. Coming back from the dead and all that jazz.

Jesus?..meh I'll respect him when he pulls off that shot through the legs like federer did:pac:

  • Well I would imagine one of the greatest tennis players of all time would be popular on a tennis court. Same goes for any sportsman extremely talented in their respective field. Doubt this makes them the most popular person in the world. So, no, in answer to your stupid question.

So that just leaves Obama then. :)

No, anyone in his position would have (more than?) his fair share of haters.

Jesus is a prophet in Islam, isn't he? I'd say he's popular enough with them, he's kind of like the Beach Boys, whereas Mohammad is more like the Beatles.

He speaks French, so that's the closest the French have in Roland Garros male final.

He did those awful Gillette ads with Infidelity Man and Handball Kid, which resulted in his ranking dropping below that of Jesus, for me.

Roger Federer makes me feel like I need a shave. Maybe that's why he's so popular....most people need to shave!

    I think people prefer Nadal
I do, legend of a lad

I like Federer because of the way he carries himself on the tennis court. He is the anti-Murray or McEnroe, and in the Bjorn Borg mould of tennis players e.g. a gentleman

I'd imagine the chinese equivalent of jedward would be most popular tbh

Nole and Nadal would deffo be more popular amongst younger tennis fanciers, being more expressive and emotional on-court. but id say Nelson Mandela or Pres Obama would be most popular people in the world. Well, the western world maybe. The newly wed royals are pretty well- received all round too, judging on the excitement being generated by there upcoming US tour.

lmao at anyone who thinks the president of the United states could ever be the most popular person on the planet, just think about the numerous countries they are currently bombing do you think he's popular there? His approval rating is 60% so that's still 40% of Americans who he isn't too popular with.

Personally I think it's probably someone like Nelson Mandela.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think saying a tennis player is popular in front of a bunch of people at a tennis match is the litmus test of universal popularity you think it is.

I imagine if you got noted hitter in the face Brock Lesnar in front of a French UFC crowd, they'd be as rabid as the US fans for him.

I know he's a tennis player - but that's it. Couldn't put a face to the name though.

Isn't the OP's analogy a bit flawed, due to the fact that they were all tennis fans going ballistic watching this tennis player?
