Just a quick thumbs up for the Audix i5 on snare. Over the years I can't count how may mics I've tried on the snare. Recently went back to using the i5. So for those who are getting into drum micing might want to try the Audix i5 - its not expensive, robust, nice small frame for those tight spots and ofcourse it catches the smack of the snare very well. Like ever other mic it won't work for every snare every drummer but it will get most covered.

No I don't work for Audix but do appreciate good mics at good prices.

Have you ever tried a C414 on the snare or would that be a bit risky in case some drummer blows it up?

Ye have tried C414 on snare, only on jazz type off playing brushes mainly. On a album I recorded last year for Dave Morrisey, 2 tracks "Holding On To Danger" and Mother Nature Say's - c414 was used on top skin of snare. That said, Wouldn't put a c414 near a snare for some of the rock hard hitters.. its not really built for that..

i like the 414 on snare and hats , even for rock .

had an i5 before , nice lowend then the 57 , but not as snappy in the midrange.

Big fan of the I5. A/B'd recently with a buddies beyer m201 on snr top and the I5 won out.
Not mad on using it on guitar cabs but I'm gonna give it another go soon as I've been using the same chain on cabs for a few months and want to see if I can make something new work too!

I have to agree completely on that.
I was recording a quick demo for a band on tuesday. Hadn't been to the studio before. We had an i5 so I figured I'd give it a shot on top of the snare. Sounded pretty nice. I'd definitely use one again given the chance. A nice alternative the the standard sm57 approach.

I have been singing the praises of the i5 for ages.
I use it on snare, guitars and even vocals if they need to cut through a dense mix.
Here is i5 on Snare top into a driven API pre. Really clear and punchy with great hi hat rejection. Triple Drop ska song.

A tiny little bit of sample snare room sound added.
