Contact Overuse.

Hey Guys,

Went to Specsavers today and got an eye test + contact lens fitting.

For the past year or two I have been wearing contacts. For the first year I was wearing daily lenses which were fine but expensive. Then I moved to monthly lenses which were fine, apart for one problem...I overuse them terribly. Sometimes I could go a whole week without taking them out.

I am in college so remembering to take out your contacts every night is not the easiest task :p No excuse though.

Anyway, I went to the optician and he said that I have signs of overuse. He said I had blood vessels growing in both eyes. He said there were 4 stages and one of my vessels were at stage 1 and the other at stage 1.5

He didn't really have a problem with me wearing contacts still, but he said I HAD to take them out every night...even taking them out in the evening when watching tv and to put on glasses. He also said that most opticians would ban contact use altogether if any vessels got to stage 2.

To say he gave me a scare would be an understatement as I am only 19 so many years of eye use to go :D . At this stage, i'm just thinking about getting rid of contacts alltogether and getting glasses.

My question is, is this issue really as serious as he says? Also, do these vessels go away after a while or what? He sounded pretty serious but I don't want scaremongering either.

No medical advice, just some some suggestions :)

Thanks,
Barry.

He is spot on really the blood vessels growth into the eye aka (corneal neovascularization) if it gets worse you can get a reduction in your vision. They're caused by a lack of oxygen to the lens.
Also, do these vessels go away after a while or what?

The main problem with the blood vessels is they never go away, they just empty of blood, however if you reduce oxygen to the eye again they refill quickly and continue to grow from where they were.

I would be worried however there are options which I'm sure your optometrist has advised you, such as changing lens type. However even with the other lenses, the hours you are talking about are extreme. And the best thing to do would be to do as told and reduce the hours you wear your lenses for. He knows he examined your eyes.
