Invoicing

I've been asked to design a website for someone and they're looking for me to provide them with an invoice. As I'm not a professional webdesigner, I've no idea how to do this or if, as an individual, I'm even able to do so.

    Any idea?

Sure. Just hand him an invoice laid out like this.

    Your Name
Your address details and phone number

    Customers name
    Customers address details

    Description of work carried out.
    Amount Payable

    Total Due
    Amount Payable

The Amounts payable figures should be on the same lines a Description and Total Due. Something about the formatting here pushes it down to the next line.

    The above is fine.

Doing the invoice is the easy bit.

What you need to understand is the implication that you are now self employed, and will return tax on this income to the revenue yourself in a tax return.

They want the invoice as evidence that you are self employed.

Just make sure you don't charge VAT. I've seen a number of small designers charging VAT only because they're used to see it being charged on similar invoices. Once asked for their VAT number the invoice is usually reissued minus 21% :)

I think MS word will have a nice handy invoice template which you can customize with your logo. Just to get started anyways.

A lot of businesses in this country get suspicious if you don't have a VAT number. If they question you just tell them that you're in no danger of worrying the 35k threshold. They may then ask for your PPS number or more likely your company number.

In most cases though, who you are and where your based, along with what you charge and what you did, is enough.

(Might be an idea to add at the bottom of the invoice who they should make their cheques out to, even if it's the same as your invoice name)

    Cool, thanks all.

I don't have a bog about the tax implications - I guess I'll give the Revenue a call. This may lead on to some additional webdesign work... not a lot, but I do IT contract work also.

    Hi,
Have a look at another posting I just did, has some Revenue Pointers.

    Hope it's useful.

    Best of luck.
