Audi a3 revving by itself...

    I'm having a similar problem with my 1.6 2000 A3.

Mechanic tried cleaning throttle body, but that didn't work. He's currently checking the temperature issue.

There's one other thing happening to my car in addition to the revs doing their own thing when the car is idling...

At times, when I'm starting off I find the acceleration really sluggish, It's extremely slow in each gear and it only reaches normal speed after about 30 seconds (regardless of how much I accelerate). It also tends to shudder a lot when idling.

Thought it was a coil pack issue, but that's been ruled out.

Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas what could be causing it?

rookav, please don't drag up old threads. Just start a new one if you have to.

I've moved your post to a new thread.

Yes, it can be a faulty MAF

Or indeed a crack or loose Air Intake Hose, Check the Air Intake for splits and make sure it is on tightly at both end.

You can unplug the MAF sensor and take it for a run to see if it makes any difference.

I've a similar problem with my own car and am at my wits end about it. I constantly have the same fault: 16555: fuel trim bank 1 too rich.

I've tried a new MAF, didn't make a difference. Have checked all my intake hoses using a smoke pressure tester, no leaks. Cleaned throttle body and reset TBA. Only leak I can think of is the little valve under the intake manifold on top of the head.

the main things that I notice are it revs up to about 2000 RPM, when cold for maybe 15 secs. Won't hold a steady rev either to check emissions.

Vagcom tells me my air intake is too low but I can't find why!!!

Seems to be a common problem on this engine tbh.

my mechanic has replaced the temperature control unit in the throttle body and is testing to see if that's done the trick as i type. he's going to do a number of runs and call me in the morning to let me know if it's worked.

the bad news is that it's going to cost me €380...

i'll let you know if it's done the trick tomorrow.

don't think the tb has a temp control. is your mechanic not changing the coolant temp sensor. the part is about forty quid.

Seemingly there are 2 things my mechanic has had to replace:

    (1) the plug leads, which are about €60, and

    (2) some motor part for the throttle body, whic is €117

    Then labour is €154.

He's due to call me this morning after a final test drive. He claims that he's 99% sure that this fix will last.

Will let you know if it's sorted.

    well that didn't work....

sending it to Audi service centre tomorrow morning so they can run full diagnostics and hopefully get to the root of the problem then...

what motor part? the tb in that model is cable operated from the excelerator pedal.the cable pulls a flap, the flap opens, and allows air into the manifold.

i think he replaced the flap bit of the throttle body... not sure. he's giving me a full report of what he's done to bring with me to the audi mechanic. hopefully with that information and full diagnostics, they'll tell me the source of the problem and... fingers crossed it won't end up costing me a fortune.

jeez, maybe you should think about finding a different mechanic in the future.you have one of the most basic engines to work on and its being sent off to hq.surely your mechanic has a general fault code reader.

had a similar issue with my 05 A3, revving on its own randomly, usually when the car is first turned on, turned out to be the lambda sensor after the audi diag test picked it up, got it changed and good as new!

nice one! did it take them long to establish what it was? or was it one of the things can showed up after the initial diagnostics were ran?

they thought it was the spark plugs first, how im not sure, they did say it could also turn out to be the sensor, but they charged me for the plugs and the labour, seemed ok for about 5 minutes then the same thing again, so that was a waste of money, so 2nd time on the diag machine and they went for the sensor instead, had to order it in which took a few days!

he does. but he said that he's delt with the fault that showed up and that still didn't work. he said he's not willing to buy in any more parts to test, because he won't be able to shift them if they're not needed...

Audi centre said that the engine speed sensor needs to be replaced. The part is going to cost €130 (+VAT).

Fingers crossed this does the trick!

Let me know how you get on rookav! I've got a lambda sensor sitting in front of me for the last month but never got round to putting it in. I had a look while I was doing the clutch but you need a special tool to get it off!

    Latest update:

The part has been fit and the mechanic tells me the power issue has been solved. However, he says the revs are still a bit high. He's keeping it overnight and going to road test again in the morning. I'll let you know what he comes back to me with then...

    (Hope that helps)

Road test was a success. Car running fine now.

After fitting the part, they disconnected the batter and then started the road test.

I'm going to collect it this evening, hope that's the end of the trouble...

    Hi Rookav,

How did you get on? I'm thinking the same is happening with my one now too, I'm hoping it's the sensor anyway! Cheers.

yep, it was the sensor. car has been running fine since. my advice would be to bring it to and audi garage, as it cost me a good bit more money with my own mechanic before i eventually got a proper diagnosis.
