I saw XH558 when it was still RAF, massively impressive. Valley, I think. The sound was extraordinary. Not just a jet sound, it was like it screamed. It left a huge impression on me.

If you can go do, you can say you were there. I won't, probably working, flying but not flying like you see when a Vulcan passes overhead.

Definatley heading to this, the V-bombers were just fantastic, just raw engineering and power.

where is the best location for this to spot. portrush head or along the coast on the beach. i have a decent telephoto lens so can afford to sacrifice some distance

Either of the headlands will bring you closer that the beach itself. Based on a couple of years ago, when the A380 appeared, the larger aircraft have to stay outside a line of buoys anchored in the bay so don't come right into the bay itself.

I'we a question about those fighter jets that show up in the airshows, would they be allowed to break the sound barier at the airshow? :) I'we never been to an airsow in Ireland, so sorry if its a stupid question, but I'we seen fighter jets almost breaking sound barier at the airshow elsewhere.

Is this the one that is booked for an airshow?

Why would you not see it? There's no mention of them cancelling their appearance at Portrush. I'm sure they'll have it fixed by then.

Its hardly going to take them two weeks to repair a fuel leak unless its a union shop. :p

The Q&A document published on the VTTS website (see link below) suggests a minimum of two to three weeks for the problem to be rectified, and explains why.

Well they say it will... and it might even take 3 weeks....
Q: How long will it take to fix the leak?

A: First, we have to find the cause of the leak. This involves draining the tank, removing the fuel pumps and contents gauges, venting the tank for a while so that a technician can enter the tank, and then removing the rubberized tank itself. We are making arrangements for the tank to be then taken to its original manufacturer, Fire Proof Tanks of Portsmouth, for inspection, repair and test. The tank will then be returned to Robin Hood Airport, where it will be reinstalled. This whole process could take 2-3 weeks at minimum.

Amazing what a bit of research shows!

"The leaking fuel tank has been eased through the tiny access hatch, carefully folded then sealed in polythene to keep it meticulously clean and to ensure that some moisture is retained to stop it cracking. This afternoon a member of the technical crew delivered it to the specialist supplier in Portsmouth, where it will be thoroughly checked on their purpose-built test rig."

Hopefully she will be fixed in time for the portrush.

" The fuel tank fault has been located and the tank bladder has been repaired. Thanks to FPT of Portsmouth for really pulling out the stops and working over the weekend in a fantastic effort to get her back in the air as quickly as possible. Just completing final validation tests on their rig. "

XH558 has diverted to RAF Coningsby due to a suspected hydraulic problem undertaking a practice display. She has landed safely and we are awaiting further news.

Travelled from Dublin for the Vulcan as the family had never seen it. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. However safety is paramount and it is better to let us down for one day then lose this piece of history for ever.

Here is a pic of it I took in Waddington this year.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great on Sunday - but an interesting selection of aircraft still managed to put on a good show

When I was growing up in Essex, one of the Vulcan Bombers used to fly annually to the Southend Airshow there and would typically circle Southend Airport three or four times before heading to the Airshow which meant it would fly several times low over my Parents' house.

It was an amazing experience to see such a plane in that environment. That same plane now lives at Southend Airport but will obviously never fly again. If you do get the chance to see the restored Bomber I'd recommend taking it.
