VW Golf 02 - Speedometer and Fuel Guage Faulty?

    I have a 02 VW Golf basic 1.4 petrol and it the speedometer has stopped
    working although it does work occasionally. As well as this the fuel guage beeps
    saying 'low fuel' when turning corners, regardless of how much fuel is in the tank! A general mechanic couldn't identify the problem.

    Has anybody else had this problem or do you have any idea where the problem may lie, and if so is there an obvious fix?
