Connecting to PSN with Vodafone Mobile Broadband

Having a bit of difficulty here, any help would be much appreciated.

I am trying to connect to PSN using Vodafone Mobile Broadband.

Have set the computer up for sharing, connected the laptop with the playstation via the cable. Tried to connect the playstation to the internet first using the "easy" settings but failed.

I then tried it with "custom" settings. So i entered the IP number, DNS, subnet mass and all that myself, but still can't connect to the internet.

Could it be a case that the vodafone mobile broadband is not strong enough in my area ?

did ya restart the vodafone connection on the laptop after setting the sharing, it wont work until ya do that and just use the easy settings on the ps3

It's been nearly a year since I last connected the Ps3 via Vodafone mobile, but it's possible..

Firstly go into Network Settings, Local Area Connection and enable sharing.
Then in the same window enter the ip/subnet as you wish.

Go into the Vodafone client and change the "best connected" to prompt. Save the settings, close the program, remove the dongle. Then reconnect and go online then. Once you're online then plug the ethernet able in, ask if you want to connect to that click no.

    On the Ps change the settings in custom as follows;
    Ip : 192.168.0.51
    Subnet : 255.255.255.0
    Default router : 192.168.0.1
    Primary + Secondary DNS : 208.67.222.222

(these are the settings I used back then)

Try this and get back to me if it doesn't work (I'm likely to have forgotten a step along the way). Best of luck.

Note though you won't have the best connection, I was on a near constant 1/2 bar with a ping of 100ms (and somehow got picked as the worst host in the history of Call of Duty :P )

Mobile "broadband" (its actually not broadband) is not suitable for online gaming period. Try and get a fixed line connection (UPC, eircom )

it works, i used o2 for 6 or 7 months with very little lag

I use O2 all the time and it's grand. Only odd thing on PS3 is downloading demos and games. Seem to get an error on the install at 14% so I don't bother getting games off PSN anymore. Xbox never has problems cos there is no need to install.

When I turn on the xbox or PS3 it usually signs me into without hassle.

If not I then click off sharing. Disconnect. Then start from scratch as in connect to the net first of all, then share the connection. Never fails to connect, always works guaranteed, for me anyways. No need to be messing with IP address thingys.

What speed are you getting with the mobile broadband?

This is during the busiest hour. Late night or afternoon I get it much faster. Good ping for this hour, too. All in all, it's a good online experience.

It works fine tbh. I've been using it for online for more or less 2 years on the dot. It occasionally lags but I've seen my friends eircom have more problems with lag than I do.

I've used both 3 and Meteors.

To the OP, if you are running XP, ICS settings in Windows works fine. You just have to play around with it a bit. You'll know you have it right when the easy settings method works on the playstation.

IF you are running Windows 7, I don't think you can share it. I haven't been able to get it to work with 7 at all even with hours of trying. If you add a dual-boot with Ubuntu, it is completely pain free, and the dongles propriety software isn't needed. Ubuntu's network management is glorious. To get the mobile broadband working, right click on the connections in the status bar (top right hand corner) and edit connections. Go to the mobile broadband tab, add and then go through the connection wizard. Connect to PS3 by ethernet and then in Network Connections, under the "Wired" tab, edit autoEth0 so that the IPv4 settings is "Shared to Other Computers" rather than "Automatic(DHCP)". You should then be good to go. Easy settings on PS3 should work.

You still cant compare mobile broadband to a fixed line.

Advantages of fixed line broadband includes: low pings, higher speed (not essential for gaming as 1mb dsl would still be better for gaming than 10mb mobile midband) and higher/no download caps.

Ping is horrendous on Midband. No doubt about it.

What I do is share my o2 dongle connection, and plug the cat5 cable into my Belkin N1 router modem port. I do this and it works fine for the PS3. With regards the router tohugh I have to NOT install the software onto the computer, simply plug it in and go

Sorry for the delay, was enjoying the bank holiday ;)

I have windows 7, so maybe that's a lot of the problem. I'll try what you suggest and the poster above and get back. Thanks for the replies, i'm begining to think it's a lost cause at this stage tho. Four months summer holidays with no COD .......

Both speed and ping are actually decent enough if they are consistant. My ping is usually banging around the 107+ mark.

Don't install ubuntu unless you have some knowledge as to what you are doing. If anything goes wrong, you could have to start your computer again from scratch so back up data. I'm not responsible for any loss that may occur. :pac:

I know this doesn't help you in your current situation, but I would whole-heartedly recommend moving to UPC. They offer brilliant speeds for very reasonable prices.

Turning off media servers in network settings helped for me. Still happens but now alot less. When I'm playing via a LAN cable i never get the error.

Ya man always have the media servers off ,I think i might just try out the new 3 mifi dongle (the black one) some day and see what happens .I tried dongle to laptop to ps3 via ethernet cable but it was slower for some reason as compared to the wireless dongle

It's strange alright. Only started getting the error when the psn came back online. Might have been a coincidence.
