    You would probably get a nicer GTI for your money. IMHO

    A GTI is good for over 40mpg.

    I reckon so, my old GLi would do over 40 without much trying. Even driven hard I would never go below 30..

    MkII GTI was prorbably the best GTI.. light and powerful enough. 8V was proably the better driver than the 16V too.
