Nasty virus has broken windows...

I got a virus from a malicious torrent & after allot of hard work, have managed to remove it.

The virus disabled AVG, but I was able to download and run Avast after much effort. I ran it, but it didn't catch the virus & suggested I run a root scan, which closes windows and scans during boot up.

Now there seems to be missing windows files & every time I try to open a program it comes up with the dialogue box 'what program would you like to open this file'.

The Sony recovery program wont work, the bios 'previous working' utility doesn't do anything & I can't start in Safe Mode.

Can anyone suggest the next step?

What's the problem with Safe Mode?

Can you reinstall the program that will not work,or is it every program that's affected?

Can you access the drop down menu when windows asks what program would you like to use to open the file.

It's a nasty virus that corrupts file extensions leaving Control Panel and many others useless.

Thanks,was able to download the file, but can'trun it cos its an .exe

Its all programs. Was able to access the drop down, but not any more...

What's the problem with Safe Mode?

The computer begins to run safe mode, but reverts back to the bios menu list and wont start in safe mode

Follow THIS guide on a working computer to use the Kaspersky Rescue CD. If it is a machine without a CD drive/you havn't got any blank Discs you can use a USB key once the machine supports booting from USB devices, if you can get into windows then you should run malwarebytes, etc the usual. If the file extensions are still broken you may need to use a registry fix, which I can help with once you do this first
