My gmail account has been locked out and to unlock it they want a phone number? What is that? I dont want to give my phone number so just wondering is there any way to sort this out another way?

Its a security measure... normally you would have set up an alternate address should your account get locked.

I gave google my phone number, it's worth it to guarantee I don't lose access to my google account. There's also added features you can take advantage of once they have your number. Never received any calls from them.

I dunno, i'm not a fan of that. We saw what happened there in China this week, gmail accounts hacked. And because i have a smart phone i just do not trust them, and i'd regard them as one of the safest. I'd rather rely on other means.

So you think because you have a smart phone and you give your number to google and "if" your gmail account is hacked they can what???? They can hack your phone using your number? Seriously?

If you have a problem giving google your phone number for your gmail account security I'd suggest you stop using gmail for all your private personal communications right now.

The number and code generation features of gmail ensure your account can't be easily accessed unless they have physical access to such items as your phone handset. With just username and password protection your account is less secure.

I'm curious what your "other" means you rely on are.

    Whats the latest Cork skate.
I've had a Hotmail account I think for over 11 years with no problems. Am starting to get those request for alternative emails and numbers etc. Hate it.
I found myself wanting to open a new Gmail account,,,of course phone numbers are required.
How are you doing. Is there any way round this.
    I'm guessing not.
    Brave new world.
I think that old simple word 'Privacy' has finally been totally errased from the English language.

Have you thought about simply setting up an email address to be the alt one? They'll stop pestering you if you do.
