Got a renewal letter from No Nonsense and everything seems in order except they included a policy change basically saying that they wont be liable in the event of
    a) ionising radiation from or contamination by radioactivity from any irradiated fuel or from any nuclear waste from the combustion of nuclear fuel.

    b) the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other hazardous or contaminating properties of any nuclear installation, reactor or other nuclear assembly or nuclear components thereof;

    c) any weapon or device employing atomic or nuclear fission and/or fusion or other likes reaction or radioactive force or matter;

    d) the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other hazardous or contaminating properties of any radioactive matter

I thought it was a joke at first but they are serious it seems!

aren't the roads dangerous enough without some eejit taking his nuclear reactor for a drive

Tis a cleaner fuel than petrol or diesel. and can be made very reliable (to last 10's of years on the seabed without leaking)

Wouldn't mind a nuclear car if costs come down. Use reactor to heat up water then steam turbine + condenser

But every car would have to be restricted to a max of 87mph cause you know what happens at 88mph

Does it include zombie apocalypse cover though ?

That exclusion clause is similar to the ones they introduced in response to the threat of (1) Year 2000 bugs and (2) computer viruses.

It is a kneejerk reactions to the potential threat of a cloud of radioactive dust arriving in Ireland from an as-yet unidentified nuclear power station or nuclear processing plant.

If any of that actually manifested as a problem here in Ireland, the last thing i'd be worrying about is my car.

I remember my policy years ago on a scooter i had said that it wasn't covered for damage caused by shock waves from sub-sonic or supersonic aircraft:confused:

It was a pain as I had to stop racing Concord down the runway:rolleyes::P

There covering themselves incase of radiation brought over here on Cars from Japan I'd imagine.

    Also my interpretation of this.

Although I wonder what the "air to ground missiles" clause came from in the old Quinn booklets. I know they're close to the border but...

I wonder if they're trying to prevent having to pay out on claims for new cars / components manufactured in Japan which may be contaminated with radioactive particles?

I could imagine there could be some scenario where someone might discover their brand new Japanese car has high levels of radiation due to the Fukushima incidents and that could have to be scrapped. While I'm sure the manufacturer would be liable for any damages, perhaps the insurance industry considers it a big enough risk to want to side-step it before it happens.

You'd never know, it might be necessary !!

Manufacturers in Japan are already testing cars for radioactive contamination.

Does it safe to buy car from http://www.japcars.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=search&startrow=101&maxrows=50&BusinessID=1734&SortBy=MakeAsc now? They are advertising: “ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL CAR…FRESH FROM JAPAN”. Does these cars are checked for level of radiation in Dublin? If no, does it possible to do that now and where?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,909 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

Thats not a new clause, I remember that being on a Hibernian Bike policy I had over 10 years ago.
Maybe they changed underwriters and the new underwriters have a more comprehensive set of policy exclusions.

I'm quite honestly not sure, perhaps it might be worth running a geiger counter over it ?

It would very much depend on where the car was driving over the last while, where it was from, and all sorts of other factors.

It's not a joke. When I was working on the motorways I used to drive a Landcruiser and every so often I owuld need to carry a piece of equipment which has radioactive material in it. There would be magnetic stickers on the jeep so declare the contents of the vehicle.

Customs and the Gardai would really freaked out at a checkpoint one day in Mitchesltown

Anyway, who is to stop you carrying such an item? If you crash you will leave a crater so your insurance company don't want to be liable.

    FTP! :pac:

At the time of creating this thread I didnt even think of Jap imports and the problems there. Big assumption by me that all cars would be checked in Japan and then again in Ireland before going onto the market! Bit of an eye opener alright!

What equipment are you lumping about in the landcruiser?

    I'm being nosey! :o

Norwich Union had similar radioactivity restrictions back in the early 90's. Ionising radiation was specificity not covered.

Have you any idea of the force required to initiate a nuclear reaction?;)

Not in explicit detail. That does not prevent the mass hysteria when you are approached by Gardai and Customs officers.

You simply comply with the rules of carrying nuclear materials, after that you're fvcked.

Does the policy still refuse to cover bear attacks within the Cavan area then?
