    Hi

I'm looking at starting a Warhammer Fantasy army but not sure as to which army to start with. Has anyone got any advice on what army to start with?

What one do you most like the look and background of? I would consider that as important as how well it performs.

I know some armies are easier for a beginner to use than others, but I'll leave someone more familiar with that to let you know which are which. I haven't played Warhammer Fantasy in well over 5 years now.

    Fantasy or 40k ?

For fantasy, the Empire are the easiest to begin with, both in playing and painting. (In my opinion, that is).
For 40K you could start with either Speeeeejs Marines or Orcs, both have a small army in the Assault on Black Reach starters box, which also includes some paint to get you started (Fantasy has it too with The Battle of Skull Pass, that contains Dwarves and Orcs).

edit: Ok, Wood Elves or Tomb Kings then :p

Tomb Kings are imo the better choice then, also quite easy to paint and a lot of variety.
I also think they have more units.

But then again, you'll end up buying more armies than just either of those two, that's how it works :p

If you want shooty then Empire or Skaven would be recommended. Empire will always be updated with a relevant book and you got a wide variety of regiments/units you can build on over time.

Skaven is if you want to play the evil guy; mutated rats who use sniper rifiles, plagues, slaves etc.

It depends on the player most of the time, but the general consensus is the below list. O&G and Tombkings are paving the way with toned down books, but some of the older ones are just too powerful.

In order of power/ability to win at all costs.

    1. Daemons
    1. Dark Elves
    1. Vampires
    1. Skaven
    2. Lizardmen
    2. Empire
    3. Warriors of Chaos
    4. High Elves
    5. Orcs & Goblins
    6. Dwarves
    7. Beastmen
    8. Bretonnians
    9. Tomb kings
    10. Wood Elves
    11. Ogres
