Is there any news if RTE plan to implement the RTE Player with Saorview Set Top Boxes, and offer the RTE Player on our TVs, ala BBC iPlayer and Freeview/Freesat? I know it is early days yet, and not many (if any?) Saroview STBs feature an internet connection. But I can't help but notice that the Player is still in Beta, and has barely changed since it's launch 2/3 years ago. With the launch of RTE 2HD, they could at least offer us some home produced shows in HD on the Player.

There are such plans, at least according to one RTE highly placed source. MHEG5 supports integration of Internet / LAN content.

It's baffling that they didn't make Network port mandatory (ethernet or Wifi, or USB that can take Wifi or ethernet. Some LGs can take a USB WiFi stick), but I suppose to set entry bar as low as possible. Networking is an optional feature on RTE's clarification of Nordig 2.2 spec.

HD over Internet would easily use up your cap, quadruple RTE's data hosting bill at least and be real time for very very few people. It would only work for PVRs as a hard drive is needed to buffer for 80%+ of population.

If/when there is iPlayer integration it will be at current Web TV quality.

I taught the parents how to use RTÉ Player on the PS3, which is the next best thing as to having it directly implemented within the TV

Though you don't actually need that PS3 app, as it's exactly the same as going to website on PS3.

Any TV / setbox with a webbrowser can use RTE Player, including some BluRay/BD players.

Yeah the app is handy, since RTE Player website doesn't work on PS3 anymore, just the XL version which the app is just a link to.

yes app is fierce handy especially as many browsers on settopboxes suffer from lack of flash player. ps3 with the app is best way at mo for me to get it on tv :)

There is such a box in the UK called Youview (www.youview.com) but of course there would need to be a Youview HD box for it to work here. I have inquired with Mary Curtis and told would look into but heard no outcome as to if it is or not being considered.

Youview looks very interesting, but silly the way you have to purchase a Youview box to avail of it. Why not just bring their software to Internet-enabled Freeview boxes? It'd be nice to see a range of Catch-up services heading to Set Top Boxes in Ireland. But the TV3 Player is quite simply a joke, while RTE and TG4 offer a decent-ish service.

E Player wasn't working on PS3, but I just tried it today and it's now working again.
