Look for a car in a scrap yard that got a rear shunt?
    What year is it?

    Alternative to a new rack...

Price the job with different mechanics, locate a used rack. Which type of passat is it? If it's one of the older ones, like one that i have here, then changing the steering rach shouldnt actually be all that major for a properly equipped mechanic. The old ones are dead simple, even the late 90s to early 00s ones are relatively crude under the skin

Cheers for the replies, its a 06 1.9 tdi, 105 bhp, not even too sure if it actually is the steering rack would like to get a second opinion on it, can anyone recommend a genuine garage in the limerick area other then the main dealers that would deal in vw? thanks

Call in to Daithi beside the Claughan Bar Dublin Road - not far from Frank Hogan's. Tell him everything you've said here.

Sorry to be resurrecting an old thread but I had this issue with my Passat for the last while.

The key wouldn’t catch when trying to start the car and it would take a good 10 mins of messing about to eventually move the bloody yoke. And when it was driving I was intermittently getting the steering wheel warning light,.

Turns out it was the immobiliser unit / steering column which was knackered.

Although they have recalled all the cars of these years 05 – 08 in the States nothing is being done here.

I know of a friend of mine who paid €1,500 for the replacement steering column but now they can fix it by just changing a part instead of the whole lot.

The whole thing cost me €450.00 yesterday in a VW garage so make sure you don’t let the garage talk to you into a full replacement.

    Car is driving perfectly now
