Internet speed on laptop tethered HTC Desire S

    Hi
I have a nokia E52 which I tether to my laptop to surf the net. Its painfully slow even with full 3G connection. I trialled one of the O2 broadband modem sticks and the speed was fast. My question is if I upgrade my E52 to a HTC desire S and then tether it to my laptop will I get similar speeds to a plug in modem stick?
    Thanks in advance
    EH

Speed is more related to the provider than the device.

Your broadband stick was O2. Was the phone O2 as well? If no then the test is completely invalid. But yes any modern phone should give same speed as a broadband stick. 10Mbit/sec is the highest I've seen off a mobile (vodafone in london on desire z). Usually get about 6Mbit/sec in Dublin with meteor desire/nexus.

Thanks for the reply. Both the E52 and stick were on the O2 network.

The modem in the phone is actually faster than those provided in sticks (14.4mbps vs 7.2mbps max speed). This means the phone has the potential to be even faster again.

Pretty sure there are lots of different types of modems. Results vary a lot. The galaxy S was consistently faster than the Desire in my experience. 7 Mbit vs 6 Mbit in Dublin same location, same provider.

Anyway, if you aren't getting at least 5Mbit/sec something is wrong.

I was use my original desire tethered to my laptop when out and about on Three with no major issues in terms of speed for checking emails and surfing. Although sometimes I may need to let the occasional video buffer for a couple of seconds. But this seems common with mobile broadband I know a few people with Usb dongles on different networks who also have to do this.

Meteor have 14.4mbit modems but the best o2 have is 7.2mbit as far as I know. Mobile broadband speed isn't based solely on the device either. Each mobile tower is supplied with broadband, lets say 100mbits. It then shares this broadband over an area. The more clients connect to it, the more this speed is divided and the slower it gets. That is why it is so inconsistant. I get faster broadband (consistant 4.6mbit) when I'm away in a town in West Clare, yet in the suburbs of Limerick City:

Device is meant to support 7.2mbps.

Yes contention is an additional factor, would still expect two meteor phones in the same location to experience same contention tho.

from memory the E52 is only capable of 3.6Mb/s

Yeah but it's pretty old. 3.6Mb/sec is loads of normal browsing and stuff, seems wierd that the OP wasn't getting that.

OP were you using bluetooth to tether?

Thanks all for the replys. I connect the E52 directly to my laptop via a USB cable. The speed never goes above 460.8kbps and if I open a webpage with alot of pictures the "Nokia PC internet connect" freezes and I have to disconnect and reconnect again. I've tried this on two other laptops and the speed is still slow.
Sounds like HTC Desire S will do what I want.
    Thanks again for the answers
