An error which slashed the price of beer and cider led to a stampede of customers at a number of Tesco supermarkets in Scotland.

A deal offering three boxes of various alcoholic drinks for £20 was going through the tills at three for £11.

Police were called to Tesco in Greenock after heavy congestion was reported in the car park as customers rushed to get the deal.

It probably would have ended in fatalities over here.

Agreed. I'm a man who enjoys his cheap drink, but that stuff is putrid. And ridiculously over-priced for an 'own brand' beer.

Its not Tesco lager, those deals usually include stella, Heineken, bud, miller and some other beers too...

The Irish Tesco sucks, over in the UK sometimes stuff gets reduced to a penny and sold off. Prices only ever get higher over here.

And whenever there's a glitch, the staff buy up all the goods.

Probably the worst country in the world for this to happen in.

    a) it's called Lager, not "larger"
    b) it wasn't limited to Tesco brand drinks e.g. the article has a picture of a bloke holding cases of Stella Artois.

Scotland has a higher incidence of alcoholism and related deaths than Ireland - and much more drinking at home instead of at the pub.
    • Scotland: 18.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 (source)
    • Ireland: 7.1 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 (source)
I'm originally from Scotland, but left at a young age, so I guess I dodged a bullet there. I have been out in Glasgow on a Friday night, and it was a war zone compared to Temple Bar, but I was old enough to know to be careful.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

They will all be returned when the locals get them home and realise that they are not deep fried.

Tesco are doing 24 cans of anything for 24 euro at the moment. Guy I know picked up 24 cans of Kopparberg the other day.

Are you sure its the same tesco own brand, as they sell over here?
