Bryan leads European Open Sea rankings

    Wednesday, 1 June 2011 18:53
Irish Swimmer Chris Bryan leads the rankings of the 2011 European Open Water Swimming Cup after a fantastic performance in the second leg of the competition in Turkey on Sunday.
Bryan, who represented Ireland at the 2010 European Championships, won the 5km event in Antayla in a time of 58 minutes 41.04 seconds, just ahead of Israeli Yuval Safra (58:42.80).
The first leg of the European Cup took place in Israel on 7 May, where Bryan finished 33rd of 53 competitors in the longer 10k event, with an overall time of 1 hour 53 minutes 1.25 seconds.

The results leave Bryan at the top of the European table with 21 points - ahead of Russian Vladimir Dyatchin (20 points) and Safra (18 points).
The Cup runs until the end of July, with five legs in total.
Bryan is now on course for selection to the World Swimming & Open Water Championships which take place in Shanghai this July, where he would become the first open water swimmer to represent Ireland at this level.

Savage. He showed up in Limerick for an aquathon last year and left swimmmer that I considered to be fish in his wake. Great stuff. Is the Worlds a route to the OW event at London? Is that his goal?

as far as I know the criteria for qualifying for the olympics is that the top 10 ranked swimmers per continent qualify. A lot of those competing now are a bit older than him.
He is going to the worlds swimmming championships this July, he has already qualified and taking part in the European Cup could bring his ranking up. It would be fantastic to see him qualify.
Trains in UL under the same coach as Grainne Murphy!!

I was speaking to one of his training buddies last night, flippin hell the sessions  17km swimming in the morning and another 7km set in the evening! Thats more than I'd swim in a month!

shotgunmcos - thats probably why he is leading the rankings instead of us ;-P
In fairness you have to remember he is a distance swimmer so 17km session for him is like 5km for us ;-P

Btw the time dosn't look impressive so it must have been pretty hard anyone can link me to a video?

I heard that the sea was quite rough out there last weekend. Chris went 1hr 53m for the 10km in Eilat, Israel on the 1st leg which shows he can be much, much faster then a 58min 5km. His best would be closer to 53 mins.

Oh yeah I've never said he can't do better or that it is a crappy time ;) if I would go under 1h with my 5k swim even in the pool I would probably call myself world champ and stop training ;) If he finished first it says everything, I guess thats the beauty of the open sea 5k one day can be nothing like it on the next day even in the same place

Chris Bryan has finished 8th place in the Men's 5k open water event in Shanghai, in a time of 56 minutes and 28 seconds in a very close finish race. This is a fantastic result for Ireland and for Chris, who heads to Holland next week to compete in the final of the European Open Water Cup where he is hoping to finish within the top 5 positions there. This concludes Chris's racing at the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai. Sycerika McMahon (100m butterfly & 400m freestyle), Gráinne Murphy (200m IM) and Barry Murphy (100m breaststroke) are the first of the Irish in action in the pool on Sunday, first day of swimming competition.
